Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo joined forces to create a united machine that would please everyone?
It would put an end to the console wars, and everybody would live happily ever after....

Please tell me how Sony would monopolise the field? MS have the money to buy sony 5 times at least.

The same should apply to consoles. All should use a standard data storage format, so that you don't have to worry about the games when buying a console - you only have to worry about the console itself. That is the way it should be, and almost certainly will be eventually.
It won't happen in the near future, because the capabilities supplied by the consoles differ, and do not outstrip the standard of the games. With DVD's, they are already as advanced as they can realistically be - incredibly high frame rates and detail. Pretty much all DVD players are capable of playing any DVD around these days. When we reach the point that the games are not streching the consoles enough, that's the time when a single format could and should be brought in.
If this doesn't happen, it's likely that Sony will totally monopolise the games market, and force other competitors out of the field. It's hard to predict what would happen after that...
The makers of the games wouldn't have anyone to compete against any more, and they could become less caring while making the games.
Unless they competed against themselves on one big console.
And imagine the size and colour of it too!
great, bring it on
