Ok serious question so please no stupid answers.
I brought Jay and Silent Bob R1 DVD. It plays fine with my region X. Except when I got the DVD (it was second hand) it had 2 or 3 slight scratches. Wasnt anything to major, they were and still are hardly noticable. The DVD run fine until it got about half way through. It started jumping and missing few seconds of film at a time. Sometimes it missed small bits, sometimes it took big leaps and others it stopped as the PS2 was 'unable to read the disc'. Is there anyway of stopping this without buying a new copy?

Thanks for your help
Chris

To clean the disc and repair the scratches use brasso metal polish, apply generously and rub it in and wipe off any excess. This works great for fixing scratched cds and playstation games too.

I used to have the same problem with my pet frog. Jump Jump Jump - thats all it ever did, untill one day I fixed it by nailing it to the ground.

Perhaps this method might stop your DVDs from jumping?

If you do try a lens cleaner, don't buy the cheapest you can find. Unfortunately Sony used cheap parts in the PS2 laser drive unit, cheaper lens cleaners sometimes have quite hard bristles on them that scratch the lens. I use an Allsop cleaner

Try cleaning the DVD's with a soft lint free cloth, wipe them from the inside (spindle hole) to the outer edge. As was said before, make sure there's no dust around the console, it's well ventilated and not on the carpet, have it sat horizontally if possible.

Also are you totally sure it's the DVD? Some PS2 laser units are prone to disc reading problems. Not that I want to cause any undue panic that your PS2 is a bit gammy ;-).

A few things cause that to happen, one is the diagnostic feature, I found when this is enabled some discs jump all over the place in a blur of squares *cough* rocky 1-5. Another is the incompatibilty issue, The PS2 doesn't take too kindly to a handfull of discs, but as you said there's slight scratches on the disc which is probably the cause. Either use a CD cleaner kit or if they're more severe find someone with one of those recoating gizmos which scrape the top layer clean off the disc and recoates it. it's never hopless :-P

Also if your PS2 is vertical put it flat :-)

With CD's, i'd recommend a lens cleaner, and a disc cleaner. For DVDs, I guess the same things are available?

No probs. Be weary of those "disk cleaner kits" though, ive heard people saying that they arent so good for the machine or disk.
I wouldnt know though.

Just give the disk a wipe with a clean cloth or whatever and use the hoover or something like that to clean the vents on the PS2.

That should do the trick.

What you could try though is giving the disk a good clean or even the console itself.
If theres alot of dust around it then get it all off quick, use a hoover or anything just get it away.

Make sure there's nothing in the disk tray like a hair or bit of dust or anything like that.

Other than that if its still not working then its maybe something wrong with the PS2 or those tiny scratches on the disk can be whats wrong.

Remember, the disks are pretty delicate in the way that if they get scratched slightly, they wont work.

Or something like that........

:)

Or you could listen to what I said earlier and pull the disks legs off. That will definately sort it out and preventing it from jumping.
