So, what is it that Sony has done for the industry? While Ninty fans boast about the company's 100 year legacy, dozens of consoles and scores of games, what does Sony have to say for itself?

The answer is simple. Massmarket gaming, advertising and finance.

Eh? Aren't those the three things that "hardcore" gamers hate the most? Massmarket morons allow poor games to sell while good ones drown, advertising allows poor games to sell, and financial considerations have meant that small developers have gone bust or been forces to give up on their dreams.

But these are things that should not be laughed at- they should be embrassed, for their is a good side to each...

The mass market gamer is not a complete moron. They may blindly buy Fifa 2002 third edition, but they do pump money into the industry. And it is this money that allows the developers of the world to create original game alongside their big budget licences. How else could developers possibly afford to create 3D games to te standards we demand today.

Likewise, advertising has it's plus points. It brings more non-gamers into gaming. No longer is gaming a hobby for spotty teenage boys- it's a recognised form of entertainment enjoyed just as widely as the cinema or TV.

And finance can only be a good things for gamers. When Sony broke into the industry they did so by pumping money into small developers to produce top quality, exclusive games. With every manufacturer forcd to do the same nowadays, it ensures that games will always be the most important thing for any console.

So, next time someone critises Sony for inventing massmarket gaming, just ask them how much it costs to develop the average game these days...

I largely agree with what you are saying but for arguments sake (if nothing else), just a few points...

I say...

Whilst the last point is extremely valid the first is slightly dubious. Yes they do pump money into the industry, but instead of seeing the 'industry' as a collective, singular entity, look at it like this. In buying games like Tomb Raider and Fifa, all they are doing are encouraging more and more games of the same calibre. The smaller developers aren't benefitting, because no-one will even look at their games. If EA and Core know there is a core (no pun intended) user base, then they will continue to churn out the same substandard game, in my opinion to the detriment of the industry.

They did do that, but they did nothing to discourage the many, many substandard games that in my opinion plague the market. I again see that as to the detriment to the industry becaue again small developers with innovative and original ideas are being bogged down in the mire of mediocrity.

The only company that fully embraces that philosophy is Nintendo. Sony have admitted that, with PS2, they are trying to corner the multimedia and 'entertainment' market, trying to combine their skill as a console developer with their talents in other mediums. Whilst the games are undeniably important, I debate the point that they are MOST important to Sony.

I await your reply...

Erm, i was just trying to re-enforce some of the things that you said, and some of the things that i thought that you didnt say, that i have.

Such as about bring Microsoft into the market, you have to look at it in away that they have followed the same path as Sony, i just thought i would comment on that, where i have seen that you did not.

Didnt realise there was a crime to correct and agree with the mighty Sonic...

Pro Evo, thanks for not reading the topic.

If you had, you might notice that I said everything you did! I said quite clearly that Sony have made gaming socially acceptable (by introducing the massmarket), that they have made it high profile (through advertising), and that they have made things more competitive due to the investment they have given to small developers.

So what the hell is your point?

So are you saying that the only thing Sony has brought to the gaming industry is money?

Maybe so, but its brought so many good things with it. Would we really be where we are now if they didn’t? Would Microsoft really have ever come into the scheme of things if it were not for Sony showing how much money could be made from this one industry? Maybe not.

Sony hasn’t just put money into gaming, they have raised its profile, no matter how you see things, you cannot deny that if it was not for Sony then gaming would not be as big as it is now. How many Snes's and Mega Drives and even Saturn’s were in households of the world in comparison to how many PS1's were when that was brought out? Sony has brought gaming to the far reaches of everyone in the world, at all ages who are capable of playing.

Not only this, they have brought the market into a more competitive one, right now we have 3 companies going around looking for global supremacy and another one that makes games for all 3. When has this sort of competition ever been around? In anything?

Sony have put lots of money into the industry, but they are also the catalyst that brought gaming so far forward in what is a short space of time.
