Xbox price Drop (again!)

XenGamers' own John Gaudiosi reports that Microsoft will counter Sony's PS2 price drop with one of its own early Wednesday morning. While a countermove to Sony's recent PS2 price drop was certainly expected, word on the immediate response was brought to industry analysts today.

"Although they were going to announce the price drop on May 20, Microsoft has countered Sony's pre-emptive strike and will reduce the price of Xbox nationwide to $199 effective May 15," said P.J. McNealy, senior analyst with Gartner G2.

Now the only question is how comfortable is Nintendo with losing their price advantage in the console wars? We'll of course keep you updated going into E3 and afterward.

ah well, we all knew that sony would drop the PS2's price, but Microsoft dropping the price of the Xbox again!?! hmm I don't think there will be any compansation this time though ;) well one things for sure, the next few weeks are going to be very interesting indeed allthough I still think that GC will outsell them both, anyway, just thought i'd let you know...

yes, but you can bet that the price drops will most probably follow suit and take affect in the UK in the next few weeks, allthough i do agree with DoubleZero as i cant see how Microsoft can afford to drop the price anymore, when I mean afford I mean in terms of profit which would seem to be little or non-existant due to the compensation scheme, yes they can afford to lower the price overall but if theyre not making enough profit then why bother?

This doesn't really change anything.

In the US, both Xbox and PS2 have been selling at $299. Now they both sell at $199.

While consumers obviously benefit, it doesn't make it any easier to choose between them.

The price drop possibly reported for the Xbox relates to the USA, where it still retails at launch price and they have not yet had any reduction.

Read the story before you post it eh?

I really don't believe that Microsoft can afford to lower the Xboxs price any more. You have to remember that dispite similar performances, the PS2 is far cheaper to produce than an Xbox.

[To illustrate this point, you should bare in mind that the forthcoming PS2 harddrive will probably cost the best part of £100 whilst the Xbox has one fitted as standard.]

There is no doubting that the GC is doing fantastic and far better than most of us expected. This is obviously affecting both Xbox and PS2 sales. However, the PS2 is already a well-established console whereas the Xbox is not.

When speaking to my friends at Xmas my prediction wasb that i din't believe there was room in the gaming market for 3 successful consoles, therefore one of them had to fail; the PS2 was already a success and the GC was certain to succeed thanks to its loyal Nintendo fanbase. The powers of deduction then meant that the Xbox, no matter how powerful, would not be successful. Now, wheres my Crystal Ball....
