No UK price drop for PS2 ... yet!
As for X-Box, its the same story. They *might* take it down for the Xmas rush, but I doubt it. It`ll probably come in 2003 when sales dwindle towards the summer.
Sony with the PS2 is the only one left with a choice now, and I`m sure that if they find sales are still strong enough, they`ll keep the price as it is. However, I`m sure the GC made some sort of dent, or possibly just a scratch, and Sony might decide to drop the price.
The problem with a price drop is where to drop it to. If they drop it by not enough, they might have to drop again, and that could look bad. However, even a small drop is enough to take it below the price of the X-Box. If they drop to £150 its plenty below X-Box, but its still more than the GC, meaning that stood in a shop, people will still see a price difference. Its quite possible that the difference itself isn`t that important, only that there is one.
As a result, my prediction is that Sony will wait a little while to see sales figures, and then if they have to, they`ll drop the price by a serious margin.
*Waits five minutes and hears "Hello, this is an official announcement from Sony - "The price of PS2 will now be dropped to £198.99 making it a clear £1 cheaper than the X-Box"*
It would be interesting to see some sales figures from Sony after the introduction of the GC - I suppose that's what Sony will wait for over here to see if they need to drop the price. I always thought that the GC would be more of a competitor anyway because it is very different from the PS2 wheras Microsoft have modelled their machine to aim at the same market.
Therefore how long until GC drops to £99.99??? I imagine it will be soon after.
Competitive edge is a good thing for all concerned.
