I really pity those who don’t own a Gamecube and a copy of Rogue Leader.
If you are unfortunate enough not to own the Nintendo dream machine then read this and you will be tempted.
Imagine the scene:
Two giant rebel transporters, medical frigates, other rebel cruisers, a squadron of B-Wings, X-wings, Y-Wings and the Millennium Falcon are all heading towards the half constructed Death Star.
Beneath you is the giant planet of Endor, and you know that the battle is raging between the rebels, aided by everyone’s favourite furry Muppets the, Ewoks and the Empire.
As you approach to intimidating structure of the Death Star, you then discover that it’s a trap! All the rebel ships bank sharply and turn 90 degrees, only to be faced with a massive fleet on Star Destroyers!
The rebel fighter ships, led by you, fly towards the Star Destroyers only to be confronted with about 50 or 75+ TIE Fighters (that’s no word of a lie!!) A huge battle ensues as you dogfight your way around the rebel frigates attacking the TIE Fighters, TIE Interceptors and TIE Bombers. Explosions are happening all around you as rebel and Empire ships get destroyed. The medical frigate takes heavy fire until you destroy the TIE Bombers. You shake off dozens of TIEs that are chasing you by dodging and weaving between the giant frigates. Having despatched one wave of enemies, more and more start attacking.
You eventually destroy the TIE Fighters, but the Death Star fires a laser blast, destroying one of the rebel transporters!
You have no choice but to attack the Star Destroyers head on in an effort to stop the Death Star firing at you. So you lead your squadron on a near impossible mission of destroying the Star Destroyers.
As you approach the massive Star Destroyers more of those darn TIE Fighters attack and dozens of laser blasts fly past your cockpit as the Star Destroyers fire their cannons at you.
You attempt to destroy the shield generators on the top first, flying above the Star Destroyers and firing at the spherical structures situated at the top, once they are gone you must fly under the giant craft and destroy another generator. Once destroyed, the Star Destroyer is vulnerable to attack, so you aim your guns at the Command Bridge and fire. The giant craft falls sharply towards the planet Endor. Do this to the other Star Destroyer and your laughing as the pride of the Empire falls to a fiery death.
All of that combined with amazing graphics plus the stunning John Williams soundtrack in the background and various characters speech (including Lando & Wedge).
Plus there’s the Battle of Hoth where you take down AT-ATs & AT-STs, Death Star Trench Run, steal the Shuttle Tyderium (the craft the rebels use to get to Endor) from an Imperial academy, fly through the narrow streets of Cloud City, fly through the Death Star core, bullseye Womprats or race through Beggars Canyon on Tatooine and many more. Plus bonus levels including the scene where Han & Luke shoot at the TIEs from the Millennium Falcons guns in ‘A New Hope’, control the Millennium Falcon as you escape the TIE’s in a heavy asteroid field and eventually attach yourself to a Star Destroyer or control a TIE Fighter in the battle of Yavin.
This game rules!!
Rogue Leader is without a doubt the BEST Star Wars game so far. Forget Jedi Outcast (it’s good, but not as good as Rogue Leader).
This is THE reason to buy a Gamecube. It’s just so amazing you wont believe your eyes. I’ve been playing games for years, but I already think that the Battle of Endor level is one of the best video gaming experiences ever.
Buy a Gamecube and Rogue Leader then be prepared to enjoy the best Star Wars experience ever!!!
