With the “battle of the consoles” at it’s starting point, it is important for the companies to live up to expectations. Unfortunately, sometimes trying to keep expectations up can be repetitive and can be a failure. With the infamous characters each company has, they have added them to the new releases to help them to victory in the battle. The fact of originality is unfortunately lost here though, with many sequels of games being seen on the release list. But, sequels do seem to succeed because of the characters contained in them. Now what I am trying to get to in this topic is that the characters are used to get you to purchase this game and for you to not concentrate on what the game has to offer.
After the 90’s, Lara Croft is now a household name. Even in houses that do not contain a games console or consoles, she is still known and maybe mentioned. The reason for her success, and the Tomb Raider series’, is the great game. But maybe it is not just the fact that the games have great game play, great graphics and very interesting puzzles. Maybe the fact that Lara is of the female species is why the games are so successful. I mean, she maybe made of pixels but you have to admit that you would be attracted to her if she were real. Her breasts are hard to miss, and are maybe used to attract middle-aged men to purchase the game on release. With the new Angel of Darkness game coming out, the next game in the Tomb Raider series, I think that Lara’s reputation will be used to help Sony become victorious.
With the GC just being released, the idea of purchasing one must be at the back of everyone’s mind. With Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong and many other infamous characters, Nintendo have a lot to other to the public. For the first time ever, Luigi has been given the contract with the offer to star in his own game. This offer was accepted and now at the front of the release line, Luigi will be on Game Store shelves for a long time. As well as Lara Croft, Mario and Luigi are also household names. Nintendo have also taken advantage of this and included them in several new releases including Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Tennis and Super Smash Bros. Melee. With the characters reputation, surely these releases will have a great chance to succeed and surely will. Maybe it isn’t the fact that the games they will be in are good, they probably will be, but these characters will attract the gullible to buy the game without even knowing what the game is like.
With Microsoft as the new kids on the block, they don’t have much to use in their army of releases. We have recently seen cross releases, by this I mean games that have already been released on other consoles and are now being released on the X-Box. With this in mind, Microsoft has done well to sell as many consoles as they have. With no known characters to use, Microsoft may be a little stuck for ideas but I’m sure we will see a new character on release of a new game. With the name Halo being spread around schools, Microsoft’s reputation of making new games will soon be very strong. But I think that this reputation may get weaker with the entire cross releases. Grand Theft Auto 3, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 and Jet Set Radio have been released on other consoles at an earlier date, which may make the public think that Microsoft have no ideas of their own.
Overall, the “battle of the consoles” will turn out to be very interesting and will hopefully end up with a deserved winner. What I have tried to make this topic, is another “battle of the consoles” one. With the many battle topics, the reputation of newbies is to post rubbish and to copy earlier posts. I hope the read has been interesting and was enjoyable, after all that is what we are here for.
