Scretary of state for education and skills, Estelle Morris, had this to say:
"The timing of the release of the Nintendo Gamecube is disgraceful. They [Nintendo] are well aware that students all across the country will be taking important examinations over the next month or so. To release a games console now is highly irresponsible. There is clearly going to be a significant detrememtal effect on examination results this year, as so many will be glued to the screen of their new games machine, instead of revising for their exams."
When questioned, David Gocen, managing director of Nintendo Europe, said the following:
"Yes, we were well aware that we are into exam season, but as far as we are aware, primary school children do not have important exams, and are unlikely to revise in any case. We do not see therefore, how the GameCube is going to have much of an effect on the UK."
When asked about the possibility of those taking GCSE's and A-levels being distracted by the gamecube, Mr Gocen looked confused, and said "Aren't they too old for a Gamecube?", before sniggering as he walked off.
More news as it happens, from channel VB.
