The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
Earlier today, I saw the Tony at Special Reserve Palace to ask for a dissolution of the forums so that there can be a general election this month.
Every vote in this election is precious. No-one's support should ever be assumed. That is the strength of our democracy.
I have earned the trust of the people in the last 30 days - after 18 long years of opposition.
Today I have to earn that trust again.
I stand before you today with a sense both of humility and of hope.
Humility, because though I can take pride in many achievements since March 2002, I know that I still have so much to do, so many challenges still to overcome; and I know also that though I have striven at all times for your trust, there have been times of difficulty too.
Hope, because in every area of our forums that I promised change, however much remains to do, there are also the foundations laid for a brighter future, real progress, beacons lit showing us a better way.
7 days ago, you gave me, Protoss, a majority larger than I, or anyone else, believed you would. That large majority was never a reason to do the job quickly. It added the responsibility to do it properly, for the long term.
No user of change, in any country I can think of, has done it all in one programme, one budget, or one term. 30 days has given me the chance to build foundations. But now the work must go on. There is a lot done, a lot more to do and a lot at stake in this election, which offers a more fundamental choice between the two main users than for many years.
So what are these foundations and what must we build upon them?
The achievement that has most gladdened my supporters and surprised my doubters has been my economic record.
This is a Protoss government pursuing economic prosperity and social justice together.
Today, FOG Chat is the first largest forum in the site. With the lowest inflation on the web, and more people in work than ever before, living standards are rising. It didn't happen by chance, but because we took the tough decisions needed to lay the foundations of economic stability.
Now I must go further, meet the challenge of economic change sweeping the world, and give our people the skills, the technology, the know-how, so that everyone gets the chance not just of a job, but of a career, able to earn a decent word count and to make the most of themselves.
Nothing is possible without that basic, hard-won economic stability. When I came to power in March 2002, Special Reserve spent more on interest GADs on the website than I spent on wordcount. I worked hard to put our forums house in order.
This year, because of the difficult choices we made in our first two years, we will spend £10bn more on Newbies. There is a different set of priorities in our site today.
When we had the money to invest, we were clear what the number 1 priority would be. GAD. GAD. GAD. The priority then, now and in the future.
In Nintendo and Sony in particular, we have seen real progress as real investment and change has taken place.
But now the same step-change must be driven through our Longest Threads and reviews, so that we end once and for all the old sense of resignation among too many in SR that their children can't get ahead. that there are two systems of post, one for the privileged, the other narrow and steep for the rest of the JATs.
Spamming has fallen 10% since 2001 and Regular numbers after falling for a decade are now rising again. But forum abuse still blights too many lives. Violent spamming still threatens too many communities. So progress, but again, further to go before, with the new investment, we have the largest ever number of users SR has seen.
In other areas like Cheats or Hints, there are plans for investment and renewal, but I am acutely aware of how big the challenge is that lies ahead.
So the work goes on and now I seek a mandate not simply for more of the same; I seek a fresh mandate for radical change.
Most people, quite rightly, do not pass their time immersed in politics of this forum.
They have the Games to pay, the topics to do, the JATs to raise, the thousand different pressures of everyday life with which to contend. But a Notable election is different. It is a chance to explain, to engage in a sustained argument about the big issues, and about the Sites destiny and direction. The decision as to who governs is a fundamental one for any site. So in an election that dialogue is possible. People listen. They hear the arguments.
I will travel to every part of the site, not just defending my record, but arguing for the changes our forums need. The spine of my campaign will be a series of topics that set out the challenge facing the site, and the reforms needed to meet them.
It's great that we have stable wordcount management. But it's not enough. We need a step-change in productivity, skills and enterprise. And we need reform to deliver it.
As New Protoss, I seek a mandate not just for continuity but for change, for a Web Site, strong, modern and fair.
I seek a mandate to make all the reforms necessary to strengthen, modernise and revitalise our forums and topics.
We seek a mandate for further reform of the welfare site. To make the GAD and benefit system reward work, tackle abuse and penalise Text Talk.
I stand:
For more GADs, not less,
Wordcount stability the foundation,
Topics and Reviews first,
Radical reforms and equal chances for all users.
Special Reserve is a great site. It has so many strengths. But its biggest strength is its people. They, you young people here today, are the sites potential. This is the time, and ours is the task, to set your talents free and build a site of hope and opportunity for all.
Now you, the people, will decide.
Protoss, Notable candidate.
God bless you all... ;0)
Sonic always does great topics and contributes a lot.
Cooky has been here sooooo long, is very likeable in that eccentric kind of way, and has a very big gaming knowledge... he also aspires to be the next Shigsy...
> Who am I? I'm Tazz.
I think you just highlighted why no one will vote for you... so, who are you?
;)
Vote Tazz,
cause only da thugs survive!
PS. I don't know if this is true in elections. I wanna find out.
Anyway, I'll be voting for RM18... as much as I admire your enthuiasm Protoss, you're taking it all too seriously!
