Where are they?
How many of you have walked into a shop a discovered a Gamecube is playable?
If so, what shop was it?

1/2pint says there are no demo consoles out! Rubbish! Some of you have played one. I want to play one, but it's a bit late now.
So, everyone, tell me of the playable GC's you have seen or encountered, just to show that Nintendo have bothered.

Jesus christ Turbonutter I thought id put paid to that poor review of yours months ago. Get some hands on experience and then rate it. Monkey Ball IS NOT the best game and isnt coming out elsewhere. There was rumours it was, but the fact Monkey ball 2 is due on the cube later this year suggests that it isnt and/or if it is it will be after the sequel is already out on the cube. There are other glaring errors such as the graphics debate but i dont even need to waste the energy.

Yes, I've read it in a couple of places. It'll be Xbox and PS2. However, Sega have gone a bit quiet on it recently.

This is it:

--------------------------------------------
Now, armed with a copy of Edge my knowledge gained from you lot for
months, I can finally write my analysis of Nintendo's GameCube. Warning,
this post contains material that may shock you, namely me saying good
things about Nintendo.

The games:

I have to say, although they may sound good (although not to my taste),
I feel let down by Nintendo, especially after all the hype. The best
game on the GameCube appears to be Super Monkey Ball, but that's coming
to the PS2 as well so it doesn't really count. Next then is Luigi's
Mansion. I'll deal with graphical standard later, but apart from that
this game doesn't seem to be of Nintendo quality. Edge only gave it
8/10, same as they gave to SSX and TimeSplitters. That means it's a very
good game but somehow, worse than expected. I agree it's a very novel
idea and its come along in leaps and bounds since its E3 incarnation,
but it still seems very repetitive, even with differences between rooms
aside. Waverace likewise, good but expected more. Now, Zelda. Zelda
Zelda Zelda. What can I say about Zelda? Ooh, well. Of course I'd heard
about its cel-shaded makeover and "cartoony" look. However, the only
screenshots I'd seen were Upwire's less than clear offerings. They could
never prepare me for what I saw in Edge. I thought Fur Fighters was
cartoony; this is an interactive loony tune! Don't get me wrong, I'm
sure its an excellent game, its just I'm not sure how sensible the new
look it is. I know for certain if I had a choice between a 128bit OOT
and its current look, I'd choose the former. I can't see any benefits to
this at all; it must only succeed in putting off some gamers, mainly
older gamers and particularly PlayStation defectors.

The graphics:

Screen shots on a monitor always look better than print, I've always
known this. Seeing as I've only ever seen GC screenshots from the
Internet and PS2 shots from magazines, I thought that currently the
graphical standard of the GC was higher than the PS2, for now. Of
course, graphics don't make games, but what I say in Edge was quote
surprising. I can now honestly make a comparison between GC and PS2
graphics: They're the same. I've seen absolutely nothing that hasn't
already been equalled on the PS2, and that includes Resident Evil. Think
about it: This latest incarnation features the same pre-rendered
backgrounds of the original. They've obviously got some sort of shadow
map on them but nevertheless they're still static. Therefore, the GC's
capacity of 6-12 million polys minus lighting is being focused almost
entirely on character models so naturally it looks stunning. Although it
is without a doubt the best looking game I've ever seen it's not
technically brilliant and nothing that the PS2 or Xbox are incapable of.
Other games I've seen are Luigi's Mansion and Pikmin, which both feature
decent character models and nice textures, but not fantastic lighting
effects. Monkey Ball likewise, SMB:M I haven't seen and Waverace I have
to see in action.

My reaction:

As you know I've been a bit sceptical of the GameCube. I've always been
unimpressed and I'm still unimpressed. Nothing's changed really. I'm not
saying it's not good, it just doesn't hold the same wow factor the PS2
has for me. I've never liked (most of) Nintendo's games and from future
prospects I doubt I ever will. I can see how it will appeal to some but
not to me. In my eyes, Nintendo have completely the wrong attitude, but
then people have said the same of the PS2. I guess, as always, it's down
to personal preference. If a Ninty and a Sonyphile both said "My
console's better than yours" they'd both be right because from both
their points of view, both their consoles are better.

And with that, I'll finish.

I think Cookie monstor (what a name :)) (heh double chin) ment your Gamecube review was more centered at reviewing the content of Edge magazine and not your personsal opinion of the Gamecube itself.

Wow, Edge in copying Turbonutter shocker. It can't be an Edge review, it's far too short, although I was using information from an Edge magazine I'd bought. It had a picture of the GC on the front cover. No review in it though. Check the date it was first posted with SR of you don't believe me.

I've already voiced them, they got me a game:

My GameCube review, as unbiased as possible
----------------------------------------------------

Yesterday I bought my very first copy of Edge. I say bought, because I’ve had Edge copies before. Back in my MegaDrive days I was once sent a free copy of the magazine (I think SR were involved with the promo) and it was good then, but times have obviously changed.

I bought it because it had a massive feature on the GameCube, and me being an unbiased gamer I decided I needed to get some decent info on the GC apart from IGN, Upwire and you guys. I have to say I was a little disappointed. Everyone here has always spoken highly of Edge, so maybe I was expecting too much, but the magazine was not excellent, merely “very good”. The biggest surprise to me was to find a glaring error in the first 10 words of the first article. They said the GameCube launched on October 14th. Despite tripping at the first hurdle, the magazine redeemed itself. The quality of reporting was very high (about par with OPS2, to which I subscribe) and I was pleased to see them cover some of the major expos, and a lot of industry stuff as well.

The reviews were very informative, if a little sparse. I get the impression that Edge isn’t really a reviews magazine, but it was useful to read something about the GameCube that I knew came from a reliable source. The screen shots were also of good quality. One thing I did notice about the reviews was that although they rated the games out of 10, which is much better than that stupid %age system a lot of mags use, they had a higher opinion of games than OPS2. What I mean by that is if a game got 8 in Edge, they think it’s better than a game that got 8 in OPS2.

The coverage of the Spaceworld event was good, and made a sensible analysis of the GameCube’s launch. I’ve heard that they lean a little towards the PS2 but I couldn’t really notice. One of my favourite sections of any mag is the letter’s page, and I was pleased to see it over 4 pages and also I liked the idea of including bits from the forums (*COUGH*).

All in all I’d rate Edge along with OPS2 with a healthy 9/10. There are some flaws, especially with that HUGE adverts section and it could do with a database, but generally very good. I’ll not subscribe but I’ll buy it every now and again.
