This is a good topic and know doubt there will be a lot of debate! personally I think the gamecubes a bit of a boring name and I would have prefferd the dolphin even though that was a code name! but i think if i had to call nintendos latest gameing box a name i would call it the...
*thinks for a while*
... the light system.

cos it is a light futuristic console and it means that nintendo are light years ahead of every body else!

If you walk into any major electrical retailer and say "I'd like a cheap Japanese games console for my 5 year old to play games on please", guess which of the three they're gonna flog you?

Probably a tamagotchi on a keyring. So that rules out 'cheap Japanese games console for my 5 year old to play games on'. Gamecube is probably better as a name because it's shorter.

I think they drifted away from the 'Dolphin' name because they found out that the majority of their userbase couldn't spell it. Plus market research probably showed them that 'Dolphin' was more synonymous with 'Ecco the Dolphin' which was a well known Sega character at the time the Dolphin codename first hit the industry.

Gamecube is also almost a logical progression from GameBoy and GameBoy Advance, in the same way that Sony opted for calling the successor to the original Playstation simply Playstation 2. Not perfectly logical of course, or else with hindsight the GameBoy would have been named Game Prism or something.

Extrapolating further, it looks like Nintendo's only choice for the successor to the Gamecube is to call it the Gamecube 2, for what else could they logically call it unless they made it a different shape? GameBlock? PlayCube? Both alternatives have negative overtones, the former being a possible debilitating illness for developers and the latter reminding us of little wooden blocks with letters on them that we used to knock over when we were 3 years old.

In the same vein, you can bet your bottom dollar that the successor to the PS2 will be called the PS3. The real question is what, if any, will Microsoft's next console be called? XBox2? YBox?

Overall, Gamecube seems most appropriate, given Nintendo's penchant for nicking ideas from other manufacturers. (Game = Play, Cube = Box, I'm surprised Sony and Microsoft haven't found grounds for breach of copyright yet).

Gamecube = excellent name.

You know why I think so? Becasue people I know who couldn't care less about gaming know that name just by looking at the thing. They wouldn't know an x-box from a suitcase (is there a difference?)

Either by accident or design Ninty have stumbled on something that could become a design classic, even leaving the pure gaming part out of it - the juries out on just how good the games are yet - looking good though and this is from a confirmed Sony w***e:)

GameCuboid?

I reckon Dolphin was better. N256 just doesn't have the right ring to it.

I always thought the dolphin was a much better name.

Failing that, they should start naming them like cars.

"Grix's Wonder Box".

I'd buy it, at least.
