If you were to talk to many people nowadays about multiplayer gaming, they might talk about online Quake, Half-Life, Wolfenstein, and Medal of Honor. But in my most humble opinion, you still can’t beat a bit of four player fun; you and three mates/siblings crowded round the TV, some cans of beer/coke, some salty snacks and loads of games. GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Smackdown, Pro Evolution Soccer, Halo, Mario Party/Tennis/Golf, Smash Bros and many more are all perfect examples of the potential for four-player fun.
Multiplayer gaming dispels any images of many gamers being lonely nerds playing online games in their bedrooms, and although there are still many nerds out there who live in the Quake universe, playing with their equally geeky online ‘mates’, multiplayer console gaming is a great social experience. Plus you still can’t beat the feeling of when you gloat over a 5-0 drubbing in ISS, or when you give your mate a complete mauling in GoldenEye.
Four-player gaming also helps increase friendship and camaraderie amongst people. In Pro Evolution Soccer for example, you can have four people on the same team and sometimes you win but sometimes you lose; although you have great fun either way.
Frequently whilst playing GoldenEye, we would roll around the floor with laughter after a funny death, or if someone was on a really hot killing spree, or when my little brother was running around in the game on his knees killing us with slaps to the knee-caps on the one hit kills mode. (If you’ve ever played GoldenEye, which I’m sure many of you have, you’ll know how funny it looks when someone is ‘skating’ around on his or her knees!)
A good multiplayer game also greatly increases the longevity of a game. Again take GoldenEye for example; after I had completed the single player mode after a few weeks/months of play, I played it for years after with my family & friends in the four-player mode.
I’ve had many cherished gaming moments that involved multiplayer gaming. Three-player Secret Of Mana was gaming heaven; not only did you have the best RPG ever, but it could also be played in three-player!!
It was the N64 though that was the real connoisseurs choice for multiplayer fun. GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Smash Bros, Mario Kart/Golf/Tennis, Mario Party 1, 2, 3, Turok Rage Wars, ISS, F-Zero, Lylat Wars, Conker, WWF Wrestlemania, WWF No Mercy, Top Gear Overdrive and many more all had fantastic four-player modes which gave hours and hours of fun.
The PSOne & PS2 have suffered by not having four control ports in the machines, though it wasn’t a huge problem as you could buy a separate multi-tap, nevertheless, the machines did/have suffered form a lack of decent multiplayer games.
Timesplitters, Smackdown, Smash Court Tennis, Pro Evolution Soccer are the best I can think of right now (though I’m sure there are a few others), but it’s not really a huge selection.
One of the key aspects I’m looking forward to about the launch of the Gamecube is Nintendo’s dedication and skill in the multiplayer aspect.
Launch day fun with Wave Race: Blue Storm, Monkey Ball, ISS2, then Smash Bros Melee, Metroid??, Perfect Dark??, Mario Kart??, the Sega-Nintendo F-Zero project and Phantasy Star Online.
Of that multiplayer list, it’s probably PSO that excites me the most. I don’t really care about the online functions; just give me the four-player split screen mode!!
Although many gamers drone on about Sony, Nintendo & Microsoft’s plans for the future of online gaming, I for one couldn’t really give a monkeys about online console gaming. I played PSO on the Dreamcast for a little bit, though it was quite good, I will much prefer it when playing with my REAL friends/relatives on the GC version rather than with a load of weird strangers.
As you can see by all that boring writing above, I’d much prefer to play games with people I know and on the same screen than online games, as I feel it’s a better gaming experience, but if anyone has differing views or is greatly looking forward to the online console gaming revolution then please let me know.
Thanks for reading :)
OH-MY-GOD it doesn't get much better does it?
I wonder what modes are in Super Monkey Ball 2?
I wish i never bought that damn PS2, I want a Gamecube :-( I will have one and buy:
Luigi's Mansion
Rogue Leader
Super Monkey Ball
&
Skies Of Arcadia (due to that Grix person for making me watch the videos)

Too right, and they're the same reasons as to why it's my choice of game in this Blokbuster deal I'm going for.
I can't wait, really I can't.
Oh, and I'm renting Luigi's Mansion, because it's short, and it just seems like the right game to play on first.

Hell yes.
Monkey Sky Diving. MONKEY SKY DIVING.
Well, it's called Monkey target... but for God's sake! You fly through the sky, as a MONKEY!
And Monkey bowling, Monkey racing, Monkey Wrestling, Monkey Golf, Monkey Pool, this game rules all.
>no worries about high ping or lagging! :D
You're certainly right there. Although online gaming has HUGE potential, all the players really need to be on a level playing field so to speak, but with varying modem speeds, the ping & lag is just annoying.
I've only got a 56k modem (HHmmm broadband soon???) and i've played a few online games but they just weren't fun due to all the lag.
I had one go at Wolfenstein online but it was a nightmare, Operation Flashpoint wasn't too bad, but in the end the lag was just so irritating that I couldn't be bothered with it any more. Jedi Knight 2 wasn't too bad, but still wasn't perfect again due to slight lag.
As most people including myself have already said, you can't beat a bit of four player fun around a tv :)
I don't really care about wether or not the Cube goes on-line.
I know that as-long as I have 4 pads and the right games, me and 3 mates can have all the fun we need on the same TV screen for no extra cost!
And also, no worries about high ping or lagging! :D
Not Bounty Hunter, the other one, Clone Wars it's called at the mo.
It's a vehicular based combat game, for 4 players on the Gamecube, but only for 2 on the Playstation 2. Even if you have got a multitap this game will still only support 2 players.
If it was PC-based, it would be called 32-Players= Fun Fun Fun!.
Or possibly even 64-Players= Fun Fun Fun!.
One one hand, it's being made by the SmackDown Team. On the other hand it's being headded by the guy who made No Mercy and Wrestlemania. On a third hand, it'll play a lot like the N64 WWF games, and on the fourth hand, it'll have a special 'counter system' where you can reverse every move.
Chances are, it'll be enough like the old N64 games to be accepted by almost everyone who had the other N64 WWF games.
Smackdown just plain sucks... but this looks different.
It wont be boring though, because the effects and enterances are supposed to be really good. The New RAW set MIGHT be included, and the nWo are in.
All in all, I think we're looking forward to quite a good game.
It'll be interesting to see if/how they use the L and R buttons.
I played a 'Cube in Toys 'R Us today, and i'd completely forgotten how small the pad was. It's actually BIGGER then the PS2 pad, but for some reason, it feels smaller.
Anyway... Roll on Saturday - I have a party!
I think those wrestling games are way better than Smackdown, the N64 ones seem so much more precise and accurate almost like a simulation, whereas the Smackdown ones are too quick and 'arcadey'.
Plus the actual control system on the N64 ones were brilliant, you really knew what moves you were doing and it just played so well, but in the Smackdown ones i always felt a liitle unsure of what moves i was doing.
Is the new GC WWF game made by the same people who made the N64 ones??? I hope so.
