Basically it seems that the margins are too low for some retailers to be able to sell it that low and they are having to slap another £10 on it. That's still better that the £150 RRP before but still some 15% more than the rest of Europe! Just letting you know. Personally, I'm not getting one for a while anyway. And this is why we find the places that ARE selling at £129, and publicise them. If you see a place selling for more than that, then don't buy from them, find someone selling at the "real" price.
A word of warning though: A clause in the sale of goods act means that although places are advertising the GC for £129 they can up the price when they realise they have smaller margins and do not have to sell it to you at the lower price. It's all to do with Invitation to Treat, Offer and acceptance (the 3 parts of a sale). But if you want a GC and can find a place that will sell it to you for £129 once it's out then get it!
So lose £40 for the game and I make that £129 retail for the GC. Another thing, if you pre-order something at gameplay for a given price, they always honour (they may actually be legally bound to but the whole issue of e-mails as contracts is still up in the air) it. For instance, if you were to order it when they first appeared for the price of £156, when they put the price up a few weeks later, it would stay at the price you paid for it, not the new price. Mine will now be going down in price to match the new retail price. Gameplay are great.
And let's not forget good 'ol Special Reserve, giving us the console at £134.99, a great deal, damn good. I thought that the price was set to stay at £129.99, but I'm a bit unsure here as to whether it was meant to be £134.99 or whatever. Let's take a look at the standings thus far:
Street price/unknown stores = £139.99
Special Reserve = £134.99
Gameplay may have the cheapest standalone console, but Special Reserve offer loads of bundle packs, allowing the gamer to get the best possible deal. I'm not just saying this because I'm posting on the site's forums, but I suggest buying a bundle pack from Special Resreve, as in the long run, it will work out as a better deal.

Gamecube Purple Console
Luigi's Mansion
Crazy Taxi
Official 4Mb Memory Card
I think this is the best one from Toys'r'us
That would cost you about £225 seperatly.
Dixons:- by far the worst prices i've ever seen, for a start there is absolutely no mention of how much they are stocking the machine on it's own for and their lowest price package deal includes a GC with any game an extar controller and a memory card all for only (wait for it :D)... £249.99! I dont think theyve even heard of the price cut even when the GC was £160 thats still a pretty bad price from the consumers point of view.
Woolworths:- Up untill a few days ago Woolworths were quite competitively priced as they quoted a GC and any game for only £199.99 which was reasonable, however no sooner had they put up all the banners stating this price a few days ago, they have as of today taken them down! so it looks like they are aware of the price cut and will be cutting their prices respectively.
WH smith:- yet another mis-informed store as they are only stocking the GC for £159.99 at the moment, bearing in mind though that when I asked the assistant she quoted their current pricelist which they had had for some time and then later stated that they would be getting another price list in by tommorow and that any relevant price cuts would be mentioned in there, however, on launch they can only supply you with a GC if you per-order one for £20 in advance and basically it's a case of no preorder no GC as far as they are concerned.
EB:- The last store I went into was EB and as I could clearly see from their new display in the window that they would be stocking GC for only £129.99 this is the cheapest yet and it is the price the consumer is supposed to get the console at anyway so this is great news, nevertheless I still enquired about it just to confirm that they would in fact be stocking it at such a oh so very reasonable price and they did indeed confirm it allthough they wont be quoting package deals for a day or to yet but when they do I'll be the first to let you know ;)
So there you have it folks! looks like EB is the best place in the high-street to purchase your GC (especially if you have allready pre-ordered one there :D) their price is about as competitive as it's gonna get (unless Nintendo drop the price agin lol) so it definately makes sense to buy it there, hope this has helped any of you who are in doubt about the price and hopefully it's cleared up quite a few queries :)
thanks for reading.
