Just to let you know that I own the following:

PS2
Extra controller
Official DVD remote
2 * Official 8Mb Memory cards
Action Replay 2 v2
Messiah mod chip
50+ games

The cost? £400 brand new. Now, call me mad, but there are around 10 games coming to the PS2 this year that I want. The cost to me would be around £400/£450 if I were to buy originals. But, I can get the lot for £20 on backup. The maths just don't stack up.

Why the hell should I part with £450 just for a few games. They are *WAY* too overpriced. The silly thing is, if all new games cost just £20 each, I would always buy originals. I'm not skint, but I'm not daft either.

Do yourselves a favour and get a Messiah chip fitted. You won't regret it. Besides, it lets you play imports too, so you don't have to use it for backups.

For those into legal jargon, I do not condone the use of this chip for piracy. I do not own any backups where I don't have the original for it. If you do obtain backups, you must destroy them within 24 hours if you don't own the original.

Yeah don't get me wrong I'm not saying chipping your PS2 will definately wreck your console, or even that having a chip fitted is wrong, just that alot of PS2's have poor lasers in them that will need regular pot adjustment until they finally pack in.

The laser can be tuned, and is p***-easy to replace (just the price of one game). I know lots of people with Messiah chips and have had no problems at all. I think you'll find the problems occur when amateurs try and fit the chip themselves.

Get it fitted by a professional, and it works flawlessly.

Another reason for not modding your PS2 is that Sony use cheap, low quality units in alot of the PS2 versions. Playing cdr (especially rips) or DVDr games can make the already weak lasers work harder and die faster.

If you look around the different forums you'll see thousands of posts from people with modded PS2's (Messiah, Neo, Origa or whatever variation) that are having serious problems and facing large repair bills. This has also happened to alot of people that have only played originals in their unmodded PS2.

To a certain extent I do agree with you on the price of games, it does seem quite high but there alot of things to take into consideration.
Games generally take longer to develop than a movie takes to be produced.
Movies are still the most popular entertainment, when a new one comes out millions of people will see it - at the cinema, then it comes out for rental and (if it's that type of film) people buy the merchandise.
When a new game gets released for a system, how many people will buy or rent it? a few thousand? few hundred thousand?

If more people were into gaming and there was less piracy, then you would expect the price of new releases to drop.

This post is not for me to highlight whether or not I play backups (which of course I don't. LOL!!), but to get you lot to wake up to the fact that you are getting ripped off big time by the big-guns.

Just think how much some films cost to make. £100 million+, more even. Yet, when you go to the local store to pick up a copy on DVD you can often pay just £15 or so if you are lucky. Games on the other hand cost *WAY* less than this, measured in the 10s or low 100s of thousands on average, although games like MGS2 can top the million mark. Still, you end up paying £40/£45 for what can often be referred to as utter cack. I know the games market is nowhere near as big as the film industry, but these massive prices are stupid.

So anyway, you go and buy this cack, and when the next true big releases come out, you don't have the cash to buy them.

Why don't you consider getting a Messiah chip (a fantastic chip - very stable and reliable), so you can get to play games earlier and cheaper. Pay £45 for 1 game or 10 games - it's your money after all.

I had a cartridge for my PSOne to play imported games, and it ruined the poor little console. I can still play games on it mind, it just has a tendancy to botched up while I'm playing. So no I won't be getting my PS2 chipped, I don't want to repeat history.
