Is it any good?

I got some money for my birthday and want to buy a couple of films.

I'm thinking of getting Pi, eXistenZ and maybe Apocalypse Now, if it's any good that is...

Shiri is an Japanese action flick. Basically it's about a female assasin, who is part of an elite group, trained to bring the divide between North & South Korea together.

It doesn't sound much kop, but watch it, it's better than most of the action-crap Hollywood has been churning out.

Mulholland Drive is another good one, it's one of those films that you have to watch a couple of more times to get the gist of it, because the first time you watch it, you kinda think it's going nowhere. Another interesting thing about it is there is no chapter stops on the DVD, so you have to watch it all the way through.

I haven't seen the film itself, but I think Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus on The Matrix) is in it - with hair!! And I also believe it's one of his first ever film appearences - but I could be wrong.

Bought some films myself; Ocean's 11 (R1), Ali (R1), Shiri (R1 - fantastic stuff!), Mulholland Drive (R1), Spy Game (R1) and Mallrats (R1).

I'm thinking about getting the new Apocalypse now myself, although I'm not sure whether or not I should get Platoon first. Both are good vietnam war films, so I'd say you couldn't go wrong with Apocalypse Now Redux, plus it has some good looking extras.

Yes I'm also considering getting Apocalypse Now. Either that or the new DVD version of M*A*S*H.

The book is fantastic, just as witty and more so as the film.
Plus you get the 1st 3 chapters of the sequel "Buttercup's Baby" at the end.

Goldman writes it as if he's merely the adaptor from a bloke called Morgenstern and keeps coming out of the story to tell you how much he cut out from the following chapters before starting again.

It's excellent and I read the whole thing in a day.
Damn dirty jury duty.

I'd forgotten all about The Princess Bride until I read this post. Fantastic film: thanks for the reminder. I just ordered the book from Amazon, too, which I never knew existed. Who knew these forums could be so educational?

Apocalypse Now remains one of the most embarassing holes in the list of films I've seen. My friend is obsessed with this film, maybe the way that I am with Casino or Pulp Fiction, and swears that there's a nine-hour uncut version of it that was first put to the studio. He says that it was one of the most disorganised films ever made, the script was rewritten entirely too many times to count, they kept changing location, etc. Is the director Scorsese? These would seem to be his trademarks, but I am not sure.

By the way, today I saw The Royal Tenenbaums and Y Tu Mama Tambien. Went to the premiere of 24 Hour Party People too, over Easter, and bought the Monsoon Wedding OST today. There's this great cinema near me called the Cameo which shows strictly-arthouse productions, and they chalk the film times up on the blackboard. Ah...

I saw this at the cinema straight after Mulholland Drive, and it was 40 minutes too long. The seats in the cinema were too close together and it was a***-numbingly painful to sit through those extra minutes.

Basically you just get more Brando, which isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't really add anything important, just fleshes out Brando's character a bit more. I've heard that the stuff wasn't included in the original because Brando was concerned about his enormous bulk that the new fottage displays in all its glory. Overall though it spoils the flow of the original.

Apparently you can choose between the redux and original versions on the DVD, so it might be worth it. The film's worth it for the opening madness - ride of the Valkeryies helicopters and surfing - but in the Redux version it loses most of this momentum and starts to drag...
