22 April 2002 - Nintendo today announced that it’s ground breaking new console, NINTENDO GAMECUBE, will launch across Europe on May 3rd at a recommended retail price of 199 Euros, and is expected to retail in the UK at £129 UK pounds.
This new price is part of Nintendo’s commitment to offer the consumer an unbeatable proposition. Nintendo plans to bring the NINTENDO GAMECUBE to market at the best possible price so consumers can feel confident they are getting the best deal at launch.
“Europe is a very important market for Nintendo and we are committed to making it a success. On May 3rd we will launch the only dedicated games console, the NINTENDO GAMECUBE, with an excellent software line-up, both for launch and throughout 2002, at a very competitive price. This is a very strong offer for consumers and one that we believe will ensure Nintendo’s success across Europe,” said David Gosen, Managing Director, Nintendo Europe.
The 'console war' is just getting interesting...
And I save more money that way lol.
:D
Talk About Giving them away!
By the end of the summer i'll have a Cube and a PS2 - No X-Box thought... damn Microsoft! :D
I love Nintendo, but I can't help but think the price is TOO low. I'd pay £169.99 no problem... even for the launch-month games that's a good price. But £129.99?!?!?! That's brilliant. People will buy GameCube because money is burning a hole in their pockets!
"Here we are Mr. SRDN, some pocket change, now, give me my GameCube!"
Cool.
I'll get a GC for about £40 now. Lose a few PS2 titles, knock off the pre-order price, and get a handy discount - ah, Christmans has come early!
Check out Digitiser on page 471 (on Channel 4 Text, for those who don't know it) and wait for pages 1/8 and 2/8 to come around.
After being ripped off with a N64 price drop a few weeks after I bought one straight away I was a bit cautious about getting a GC at launch. Now I've no problems.
Surely we'll have a £150 PS2 before the end of the summer. Will Microsoft be brave enough to drop to the same price at the same time?

But this has come from Cake Media, the company who handles Nintendo's PR, so it's not going to get anymore reliable, unless Miyamoto-san knocks on your door, dressed as Princess Peach and presents the press-release to you on a silver-platter ;)
