Every game must have a genre. Am I right? There are lots of different genres, there are fighting games, there are adventure games, there are sport games, and the list could go on and on. But what about those games that don’t fit in with all the rest? You know that; say a game like Shenmue, now that would be classed as an Adventure game, right? And what about ISS? A football game isn’t it?

Well what about a game like ‘Hey you Pikachu!’ What does that game come under? It doesn’t really come under any genre at all. I mean it’s not an adventure, it’s not an RPG, and it’s not really a sport game. So what is it? Or is it a new kind of genre? All you do is talk to Pikachu and play with him, and help him out. Now, if I’m not mistaken, that shouldn’t be classified as a game, should it? To me a game should be against something or someone that is fun to play. Now to me, that says that ‘Hey you Pikachu!’ isn’t a game, nor is it fun.

Don’t get me wrong, I know ‘Hey you Pikachu was only for kids but it still can’t be called a proper game. There are lots of other games that fit into this description. Games like Parappa the Rapper. It could be classed as a dancing game, but is that really a genre? I mean, come on, how many dancing games have you seen out in the last few years? It could be called ‘one-of-a-kind’ I suppose but it still doesn’t fit into a genre category.

But games don’t have to be one genre, do they? Games could be loads of different genres and that’s what I think make a game good (Apart from graphics, gameplay and all the rest) Take Shenmue for example. That is classed as an adventure game, am I right? But you fight, work and play loads of mini-games in it too. So to me, that should be classed as an Adventure game, fighting game, action game, and there’s also a little hint of a driving game when you ride the motorcycle. So there are lots of different genres that Shenmue could be classed as, and that’s why I think the game is so good, because there’s a bit of everything in it.

But is not having a genre that everyone knows. Could it be that not having a genre that everyone knows means that the game that you have made is new and original. Couldn’t it? Well sorry to disappoint you but going by the evidence of the games that don’t fit into a genre been the best games ever made.

In the future, I think that more and more games will become genre-less. Whilst there will always be the standard driving and football games etc. I can see more and more developers creating games using a fusion of different genres to improve and enhance gaming experience. Games in the future will become increasingly genre-less – if anything, there will be a reduction in genres but a few created, as developers become more skilled and are able to create more innovative games. As technology improves it will allow developers to create the type of games that they never were previous able to do, creating new types of genres, and in my opinion, games that will transcend the traditional genres of today.

Yes

I love games with lots of things in them aswell. Games with tons of things to do in them are great.
GTA3 is one of those games with tons of things in it.

I dont think that games will become 'genre-less' as all games will have a genre or a combination of genres.
If the games in development dont fit into the genres that are already done then its basically a new genre.
