Do you believe in intelligent life?
There are of course prequisites:
The planet must support life
It must be stable
It has to have time for intelligent life to evolve
For me the prospect is dim. There are millions of planets in the galaxy at large but what is the possibility that they have intelligent creatures
living on them?
Remember that intelligent life could well wipe itself out in a war (think how close we came in the cuban missile crisis) and that even if there was intelligence it may still be in the stone age.
I believe that the galaxy is full of life ranging from bacteria to animals but I think the chances of itelligent life evolving (you need precise conditions) in slim. Remember that if aliens visited us 69 million years ago they would find dinosaurs but not sentient beings.
And even if there was what is the chance that they would come to this corner of the galaxy? They obviously haven't yet or we would know about it, unless you believe that they are keeping out of human affairs to avoid war or that they just haven't travelled to this part of the galaxy yet.
Any comments on this?
No it isn't.
The space the universe has to occupy /IS/ the universe. There is nothing "outside" the universe because the concept of three dimensions, plus time, plus spin, just doesn't exist "out there".
Furthermore, the time the universe has to exist /IS PART OF/ the universe. That's why it's called the space-time continuum.
"D'uh" ;)
Consider the universe as 3-dimensional space wrapped round on itself. Kindof like a sphere where the 2-dimensional surface of it isn't 2-dimensional but 3. Perhaps if you travel to the edge of the universe you just keep on going and come back on the other side.
It doesn't really matter. The universe is expanding faster than the speed of light. So, unless you care to invent faster-than-light travel, you'd never be able to hit the edge.
I used to care a lot about this kind of stuff, then I turned 13..

Maybe so, but just 70 years ago people could still not concieve landing on the Moon.
Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in 100 or 1000 years time...unless we destroy ourselves...or the world is hit by a very large meteorite...
Do you know, the immense size of the universe, the amout of oppertunities and the amount of stars has let staticians come to the conclusion that the chances of life in the universe other than our's is very nearly definite, but the chance of us coming in to contact with this life is nearly impossible.

all im saying is that there is no way of knowing that space is finite
If the universe had exitsted for an infinite time, it would have reached thermal equilibrium. It hasn't, therefore it hasn't existed forever.
The probability of a quantum fluctuation to create a universe varies with the mass created. To cut a long story short, an infinite amount of mass in the big bang would have a zero probability of happening.
Also there is a theory that the universe is interloping: that if you find the edge you will come out on the other side.
Both these theories imply that the universe does have some kind of limitations.
Yay! pointless contradiction...

prove it
