In response to Hmmm's migration to FTTC ... I replied with the following and was advised to make a new thread ... so here it is:

Nice that you've achieved 'development' Hmmm but getting similar speeds from ADSL2+ since my upgrade last year ...

... however, what has been happening today?

First thing this morning ... router had 'gone off-line' and no settings! Sorted, imported back-up and on-line. No problems all day, until Mrs DL wanted access about half-hour ago ,,, no problem but no internet. Router 'off-line' again but had maintained the settings!

What is going on? Is it our line? Is it ... ?

EDIT: Since I posted above, the router has disconnected again! No settings lost this time again but it's becoming far too frequent! The router is a Netgear DGND3300v2 and all is upgraded.

This problem has continued since this thread began and has continued on a regular basis since then. Lost settings within the router ... reinstall settings and bingo, 2 minutes later ... gone again!

Arrived home early this afternoon and internet off ... guess what! 4 reboots and reinstall of settings and we have lift off Houston!

Not acceptable ... so upgraded router ;¬)

No N300 any more but now a N600 ... far more reliability :¬)

Just to let you know ... connection lost about 5 mins ago and restoring backup settings resoved the problem ... so weird this!

@srs_wubwub ... many thanks for the quick response and for your exhaustive tests. I'll continue with your suggestions and respond when I've completed them.

In hindsight, I remember that my previous router suffered from a similar problem, hence the upgrade. (From Netgear DGN100 to Netgear DGND 3300v2)

Thanks srs_wubwub, ticket raised : 199847

As I've just briefly mentioned, connection has been stable since 11 pm yesterday and is fine at present.

I would suggest router rather than connection at this point.

An unstable connection is unlikely at best to cause the router to drop connection credentials and alike. What we can do however is run some diagnostics to see if we can find any errors on the line.

Just pop us over a support ticket and we'll put the line through its paces and provide details of how to move forwards. Always best to mention in the ticket as well that you do not have a test socket.

If you get the ticket in sooner rather than later I'll take a look at it myself.

Thanks Eccles. This router last dropped settings about 4 months ago and a simple back-up install sorted it. But 4 times in one day is a bit much!

I have two 'ancient' routers, which I don't think will help and I have no BT Test Socket.

This 'problem' has happened again whilest I was out 'baby sitting' recently, between 8.30 and 9.45 pm this evening. Mrs DL did say that it seemed to resolve itself after about 10 minutes.

Router or connection?

Sounds to me like a fault is developing with your router. They don't just drop the settings for no reason. If you have a 'backup' router or one you can borrow then I'd suggest trying this first. If the 2nd router still drops the connection then run it directly from the BT test socket with nothing else connected to the phone line.
