The Playstation was released back in 1995, and despite only having the capabillities of 32-bit graphics, it still saw of it's closest competition in 'the 64-bit era'.
Then about 5 years later came the PS2 - an advanced follow-up to the PSX and PSOne. It has also gone a long way, and has sold MILLIONS world-wide - giving the X-box and GameCube a real challenge top nick Sony's once again anticipated crown in the console wars!
And incase you haven't heard, Sony already have the future PS3 console in mind, and also intend to launch it by the end of 2005!

So there was a 5 year gap between the launches of the first 2 Sony consoles, and it also looks like the 3rd edition of the Playstation will arrive another 5 years after no.2.
My question is: "Is this all too soon???"

Ok, a 5 year gap between each console may seem like a fair distance, but that is not neccesarily what I am concerned about. Look at the specs for each console, and compare it with the release dates of the simlarly designed consoles.
The 32-bit PS arrived about 3 years after the 16-bit SNES was launched. And there was also a similar distance in time when compared with the MegaDrive's release. So even though it was released some time after what may have been considered as it's 'spec rivals', it still managed to command and conquer above the rest.

You could look at the N64 and Dreamcast and say that they were the 'Playstation's rivals' - due to their release dates, but not by their specs. The N64 came 2 years later, and it was a 4 year gap before we saw the 128-bit Dreamcast.
But still, through all those years, the PSX managed to somehow beat them all and end up on top!
But just becasue it worked with their first console doesn't mean Sony will 'definitley' be so fortunate in the future!

The Sega Saturn arrived just one year before the PS, and we never seemed to hear or see anything more from it. Maybe the power of Sony was just too much for it, or maybe it was truly beaten by it's closest launch-date rivals.
This example proves that a console can beat off the competition when launched at the right time. But even though it's worked for Sony before, i'm not so sure history will repeat itself next time...

Look at when the PS2 was launched, back in 2000 when the likes of the N64 were already coming to an end. And by being a 128-bit machine, surely it was designed to rival the others of the same specs as we know.
By releasing it early, Sony do easily get the highest number of sales for the next 2 years or so, which could put them ontop again - like with the PSX. But there are also one or two advantages for the other 2 that decided to wait a while. Nearer the time that Ninty and MS finnish the final designs of their new consoles, a new and advanced piece of technology may suddenly arise, and they may have the time to in-corporate that into their mahcines.
As for Sony however, it's all to late for changes. Unless of course they want to displease their loyal fans with a £100 add-on, or even start again with a new console - like the PS3.

So you can see how releasing a console so early can be bad for the company, and I feel that Sony may experience this soon, if they continue to work in this way.

Miyamoto has anticipated that the GameCube will last for an incredible 8 years! In 8 years time, the PS3 could be 5 years old. And if it is a 256-bit console or whatever specs are to follow, then it could be coming to an end when the others are just entering the '256-bit era'.
This may have it's upsides as Sony are staying ahead of the rest in terms of technology, but like I said earlier, new technology could get the better of them!

The way I see things, Sony are moving too fast and jumping in to grab the top spot by beating the others with their own 'firsts'. They need to slow down, or else they'll soon run out of ideas and will be beaten by their competition.
After all, every gamer preffers new to old! And that could mean that gamers of the future will prefer the latest release from Nintendo rather than Sony's 'first'.

Sony do move a little fast in the business in releasing their new hardware.
But look where that got them now. Very true, nice post.

I think that maybe Sony are scared of the massive potential of their next gen rivals consoles capability. Xbox, in the hands of talented developers, can do anything with those specs. Nintendo already have those developers. Because people are gazing in wonderment at Xbox, Sony are trying to steal that thunder with details of PS3. Market ploy or genuine fight at the threat to their position? I think its a bit of both.
