Received this press release today for my gaming site:

REDMOND, Wash. - April 8, 2002 - Hailed widely as "video game of the year" and recipient of multiple industry awards for excellence, "Halo(tm): Combat Evolved" has earned the distinguished honour of being the fastest million-unit seller ever for any next-generation console. According to NPDFunworld, the definitive source for toy and video games industry sales data, "Halo: Combat Evolved" recently crossed the magical 1 million mark in sales in the United States and Canada. Statistically, this means that more than six copies of "Halo: Combat Evolved" have been sold every minute of every day since its launch on Nov. 15, 2001.

"Halo: Combat Evolved" also has played a major role in helping the Xbox(tm) video game system from Microsoft Corp. set additional key sales records in the United States in just four months following its launch. The following milestones put Xbox on pace for long-term, worldwide success:

With nearly four games sold for every system purchased, Xbox has a higher attach rate than any next-generation console. Data shows that in the four-month period following the launch of Xbox, owners purchased 1.2 more games with their Xbox system than PlayStation 2 owners did, helping Xbox achieve 82 percent more software sales than PlayStation 2.

In just four months, Xbox has already catapulted to the No. 2 position among current game console sales.

Since its launch, Xbox has outperformed PlayStation 2 sales by 25 percent when comparing system sales during the first four months of each on the market.

Looking good ;)

Sure xbox havent sold as many consoles as the PS2 did but that doesnt matter, its just about the taste of the gamer.

I decided to buy a xbox because I love games like halo and amped and not games like sonic and super smash bros that made there way to the gamecube, its just about taste.

Anyway all the games that have come out on the PS2 are probably going to come out on the xbox anyway any thanks to the xboxes great graphical performance the games will be more improved and better in there own minds.

Take GTA3 for instance, It was a massive hit for the PS2 and now there bringing it out on the xbox this month, theyve made new missions and the graphics have been improved as well as the gameplay and control options.

XBOX was made to improve games and make new and better games than ever before. The xbox has real talent and I have high hopes for it.

Im sure theyll bring out thousands of brilliant titles whether there re-releases or game exclusives. Halo has been ultra successfull, it may even be the best game ever invented, they are even making a film on it, AMAZING!

Halo has everything, massive levels, great graphics, sound and gameplay. You would never see a game this good come out on the PS2 because the console simply doesnt have the power to play games this big.

Game List:

HALO
DEAD OR ALIVE 3
AMPED
ODDWORLD
PGR
GTA3
MAX PAYNE
SIMPSONS ROAD RAGE
COLIN McRAE 3

and many more. In the future many great games will be coming to your T.V screens and im sure theyll be great.

Id reccommend the NINTENDO GAMECUBE for the younger crowds from 5-11 year olds, im 12 and I love my cuddely xbox, its great, all the games are perfect in every way, especially HALO! The NINTENDO GAMECUBE does have some great games but id still reccommend it for younger people, games like Luigis Mansion, Sonic and Super smash bros deffinetly belong on the NINTENDO GAMECUBE and not on any other console(can you just imagine them coming out on the xbox!)

The decision is up to you and dont let your friends convince you into getting a PS2 when you had your eyes set on a lovely xbox, do whats right for you.

That would seem to be very territory-specific.

It's also interesting to note the comment:

"But analysts say a lack of compelling software titles is mostly to blame for Microsoft's weak game debut."

But that was obvious before the XBox was ever released.

The XBox can be a success without selling more units than PS2. For XBox to be a success it just has to be a viable development platform. I.e it is worthwhile for the developers to release games on the platform.

Unfortunately, the DreamCast didn't reach this number of units. The DC had sold around 10million worldwide before the announcement to stop hardware production was made.

So it would seem tha magic number, as a complete guess from someone with no business knowledge, would be around 12 million units worldwide.

Yep, Europe is very important. Europe is actually the 2nd most important region after America, as the computer game industry generates more profit in Europe than Japan. Europe is also predicted to overtake America in 2 years time, and be the biggest profit making region for video games.
