What are your thoughts?
A major revamp of a neglected corner of Holmfirth is gathering momentum.
And the hope is to have Kings Head Gardens as a focal point long before the Tour de France hits town in July.
The gardens have been subjected to various improvement plans over the years but budget cuts have prevented any of them going ahead.
One project was to have a statue of Bill Owen in his famous guise as Compo, from the hit TV series Last of the Summer Wine, but the estimated costs soared to £200,000.
But thousands of pounds are now being spent on the gardens and in the latest scheme two ceramic murals are currently being installed in the park.
Mural one comprises tiles made with Booth House Gallery sculptor Jim Robison and members of Holmfirth Friend to Friend group, a luncheon club for older folk.
Each member decorated a tile after Jim had demonstrated the possibilities, with some images related to the last 50 years in the Holme Valley.
The project was funded by a Queen’s Jubilee Year Grant and the tiles were fired in Jim’s kiln and assembled on a board which will decorate a wall in the park.
Mural two is a larger commission for Jim from Kirklees Council and it depicts the landscape of the valley as well as having tiles depicting past and present activities in the area.
Included are quarrying, woollen trade (sheep), farming, ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ Bamforth’s postcards and in a nod to the July’s Tour de France, cycling.
Jim, who is putting finishing touches to one of the murals, said: “There has been a lot of talk over the years about the gardens and it does look as though it is coming together.
“They are sited on the site of the former King’s Head pub which was demolished after being hit by a runaway vehicle coming down Greenfield Road.
““There are already other plans in the pipeline including more carvings and planting in the park and I believe it will come together very shortly”.
The park was built in the early 1970s, on the former site of the Kings Head pub, as part of Holmfirth District Council’s ‘General Improvement Area’ scheme.
But the park with its large paved open spaces had become outdated and had fallen into disrepair.
Local councillors and traders have said the site gives a negative image to people entering the town.
Well, I for one can think of who to get funding from! see above posts!
The future of a troubled charity is to be discussed at a ‘special’ parish council meeting, convened at short notice.
Holme Valley Parish Council (HVPC) will discuss the future of the Holme Valley Land Charity, at the parish council offices, Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, on March 26 (7pm).
The charity, which belongs to Holme Valley Parish Council, has come under repeated attack for selling land it had no right to sell.
A ‘special meeting’ has been convened at six day’s notice “to consider the role of Holme Valley Parish Council (being a public body) as Trustee of the Land Charity in the light of recent press statements and any actions to be taken as a result of adverse publicity”.
HVPC will also discuss what information, requested through Freedom of Information, will be made public. The council has already been rapped by the Information Commissioner for failing to make information available.
But while parish council meetings must be heard in public, the council will discuss ‘whether items on the agenda should be discussed in private session’.
The meeting is set to clash with a Kirklees full council meeting and two Kirklees councillors, who also sit on the parish council, may not be able to attend.
Holme Valley Land Charity was launched in 2009 to sell old quarry sites to make money for community projects.
But despite raising more than £130,000 through land sales to date, its projects so far include installing just one bench and sponsoring a school writing competition.
In the meantime, the charity has been forced to give seven plots back, lost three legal disputes, been rapped by the Information Commissioner and Trading Standards and has a number of other ongoing land ownership disputes on its hands.
Earlier this month, Shepley man Peter Phillips told the Examiner that the charity had charged him £20,000 to buy back his own garden.
Stephen Green, who has campaigned for years to expose the Land Charity’s wrongdoing, said: “What I want to know is when are the people who have lost out going to be properly compensated for the money they have lost and the distress they have undergone?
“Having been involved for over five years now I have absolutely no faith in this council to sort this matter out themselves after the shambles they have created.
“I fully support (Colne Valley MP) Jason McCartney in his call for the District Auditor to be brought in and for a full and public investigation into how this council is operating and I would be interested in what action he intends to take.”
For those who don't know, it's where 'Last of the Summer Wine' was set and filmed also.
Now I sort of keep in touch with the area, and I've noticed several reports of this so-called 'Charity' laying claim to land, and then attempting to sell it on. They have already had to release several parcels of land back to the REAL owners, and they are still trying to take land that does not belong to them 'for developers to use'
Who on this Earth allowed these people to run rough-shod over the rights of an accredited landowner, who has paid for, and worked the land, while quoting out of date documents and not found the current ownership?
Just another example of 'every piece of land is owned by someone'.. Just make sure you do!
> Shaneo, moaned that it they was "property of WCW"
Actually, I moaned that it's property of WWF, not WCW. Get the facts right before shooting your mouth off like that.
"Shaun just likes to think that he knows it all as he has his "great" video collection. It's not his fault!"
I don't want to sound boastful, but it is true that I (with maybe Congy and DW) have the greatest knowledge of WWF on here. I'm sorry, but it's the truth, and if you can't stand the truth, then it isn't my fault, and yes, my video collection is great :D
Now back to the recluse in the wardrobe :)
