I think not, but I don't really understand the sales figures for certain console games, and the consoles themselves. Sony's marketing has been flawless, and they've reaped the profits, PSOne and PS2 are brand names, incredible success stories, just like the Game Boy and Pokemon franchises, anyway, where am I going, ah yes - console-gaming - yourself and a mate or 2 with a few control pads attached to a large box under your telly, for hours upon hours, through rain or through sunshine - PC gaming taking over? Pah...
There is a definite divide between the mouse & keyboard and the control pad side of gaming, bringing the two together would be like using magnesium as bubble bath - not good for the health.
Dreamcast. Great console, great games. Too fiddly. So we can play Quake against the Italians, great. Can do that via a PC, much more easily. Mouse, Keyboard, microphone, fishing rod, Webcam...all very inventive, firsts for console gaming, probably lasts too. You can't take elements of Personal computer gaming and blend them with home console gaming without checking to see if the final mix tastes sweet. Sweet would equal 15 million unit sales of course.
DVD is just about as far as they can take it, Sony should be praised for currently offering the best value console around - £30 more expensive than a Game Cube, but you can stick Russel Crowe in your PS2. (Through Gladiator of course, please do not attempt to insert Mr Crowe into a DVD player...) But as I say, DVD is the limit. Why chase a market that doesn't exist, when all we crave is a unit to play games, hassle free, and to have a great time doing it?
So online gaming could be fantastic, broadband at least. ChuChu time lag wasn't fun. Nintendo have it right, but we're putty in their hand and they can make their console look as daft as they want, to coin a phrase - at the end of the day, games is what we want and games is what they're offering. So I like.
No need to spend 10% of the console's initial price on a DVD playback kit? Why, at £300 it should come with 3 DVD's free anyway. My eyes? X Box = too pricey. The Market has moved on.
PCs may cost £1000's, or around the one K mark, which is good value. They're not solely for gaming purposes, yet the graphics cards that we can embed inside them are capable of greater visuals and lighting effects than any console released, the monitor just takes away that TV natural fuzz, which makes the console game look smooth...
Controversial.
Buzzing insects, deep voice, Play More, Work Less. And all that. Nice idea, shame we have to work more to afford to play in the first place, end up playing less, and so it's all a contradiction.
It's all good, believe - cracking Guiness advert.
