Should I believe these magazines, mostly PC gaming magazines, which seem to think it's in fashion to slate console gaming? Are we really not caring about our consoles nowadays? Are PC games what we all really want, deep down?

I think not, but I don't really understand the sales figures for certain console games, and the consoles themselves. Sony's marketing has been flawless, and they've reaped the profits, PSOne and PS2 are brand names, incredible success stories, just like the Game Boy and Pokemon franchises, anyway, where am I going, ah yes - console-gaming - yourself and a mate or 2 with a few control pads attached to a large box under your telly, for hours upon hours, through rain or through sunshine - PC gaming taking over? Pah...

There is a definite divide between the mouse & keyboard and the control pad side of gaming, bringing the two together would be like using magnesium as bubble bath - not good for the health.

Dreamcast. Great console, great games. Too fiddly. So we can play Quake against the Italians, great. Can do that via a PC, much more easily. Mouse, Keyboard, microphone, fishing rod, Webcam...all very inventive, firsts for console gaming, probably lasts too. You can't take elements of Personal computer gaming and blend them with home console gaming without checking to see if the final mix tastes sweet. Sweet would equal 15 million unit sales of course.

DVD is just about as far as they can take it, Sony should be praised for currently offering the best value console around - £30 more expensive than a Game Cube, but you can stick Russel Crowe in your PS2. (Through Gladiator of course, please do not attempt to insert Mr Crowe into a DVD player...) But as I say, DVD is the limit. Why chase a market that doesn't exist, when all we crave is a unit to play games, hassle free, and to have a great time doing it?

So online gaming could be fantastic, broadband at least. ChuChu time lag wasn't fun. Nintendo have it right, but we're putty in their hand and they can make their console look as daft as they want, to coin a phrase - at the end of the day, games is what we want and games is what they're offering. So I like.

No need to spend 10% of the console's initial price on a DVD playback kit? Why, at £300 it should come with 3 DVD's free anyway. My eyes? X Box = too pricey. The Market has moved on.

PCs may cost £1000's, or around the one K mark, which is good value. They're not solely for gaming purposes, yet the graphics cards that we can embed inside them are capable of greater visuals and lighting effects than any console released, the monitor just takes away that TV natural fuzz, which makes the console game look smooth...

Controversial.

Buzzing insects, deep voice, Play More, Work Less. And all that. Nice idea, shame we have to work more to afford to play in the first place, end up playing less, and so it's all a contradiction.

It's all good, believe - cracking Guiness advert.

Here we go again...

There no need to upgrade a PC every few years, its a myth that you need to do so...

I'm still using my P2 450 which I picked up in 1998, and its fine for gamesin... I ran both Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Jedi Knight 2 at 1028x1024 with all options turned up to the maximum settings...

They'll explode before us before that happens. Or something. So Solid Crew - Ride Wit Us. Do they sample music from Mario castles levels on the NES?

Listen out for it.

Do you think we'll ever see the day where we have to install games on the Xbox's hard drive?

Well, the PC used to be king of gaming- many genres were not possible in the console realm at all.

However, almost every single one of those genres has now been successfully moved over to consoles- only RTS and Flight Sims remain PC specific.

And things'll get worse when console gaming takes off online... that'll be another PC exclusive out the window.

The only thing that bugs me about PC gaming is the need to keep upgrading your system for it to run the new games, the life of a graphics card is around 2-3 years I would say, thats if your a hardcore gamer, where as the average console life span is around 5 years, sometimes longer the PS one still has new games being produced and that started way bk in 95.

Now what I also prefere about the console world is the sheer simplicity of it all, buy a game and your guaranteed that its gonna work as good as the next mans version, unless of course his or hers console is up the spout.

Trading saves, easy, running software, easy no modification required, controllers, easy plug and play, drivers? pah who needs em... I could go on but im very tierd and this argument has been had before, I dont care what you think whoever you are reading this, console gaming wins hands down over PC gaming, dont argue back, thats it, thats a fact, in terms of sales im sure consoles, united as one(Nintendo included, cant leave the poor beggars out) prove that IT IS the best by turning the PC world around and showing it the door.... to the toilet that is.

Nice post. PC's have been at it for a long time, endeavouring to meet the demands of the gaming world. Potentially, you could grab a GeForce graphics card, output it to a TV, plug in a game pad, configure the system, then stick it hidden away in a cupboard and treat it as a console. Neat idea.

In theory it would provide better graphics, sound, etc than all the consoles around today. Fact. But by going this far, we would still be eliminating the sole purpose of console gaming. Consoles are designed to be neat and tidy gaming machines, without the hassling of installing, bugs, upgrading, and all the filth of PC's. Consoles are also relatively cheap in comparison.

So I am happy to keep the divide. PC's are all round machines, I use one, but play games on my XBox. Works for me.
