This offer, it appears will sway more than a few currently thinking about getting a PS2.
I'm sure all of us that have pre-ordered will not be swayed by this (I won't be), but it does seem a good move by Sega.
Opinions?
No-one in their right mind would buy a PS2 just to watch DVD's. A dedicated DVD player of the same price is always going to be better than a games console that also plays DVD's. This is the case with all things (eg a games console for £300 can compete with a PC costing a thousand pounds when it comes to games merely because the PC does many other things, it is not designed solely with games in mind).
Surely anyone that really wants a DVD player has already gone out and purchased one. The combined model works for people like me who sort of want a DVD but dont want to pay loads for it and are not bothered enough to buy a stand alone model. As we keep saying it is a nice added extra BUT that is all it is.
A games console must live or die by its games and that in the end is what will happen.
It is amusing that until recently, fans of the Dreamcast - and Sega themselves - were playing down PS2's ability to play DVD's. Now suddenly, when the launch of PS2 is imminent, it's a great thing, and Sega have decided that it is important after all, hence this offer.
PS2 is primarily a games console, and the fact that it plays DVD's is simply a bonus - something which people seem to have lost sight of. It is my opinion that anyone who simply wants a DVD player would be wasting their time buying a PS2 anyway; they may as well but either a £300 DVD player, or a £150 player and a stack of DVD's to watch on it.
I would think that most of those who've pre-ordered will be hardcore gamers who have already made their decision, rather than casual gamers who may be easily persuaded to change their mind.
I have a feeling that the demand for PS2 will actually work in Sega's favour this Christmas. Because Sony cannot keep up with the demand, there will be parents who will buy Dreamcast - DVD player or not - so that the kids will not be too disappointed on Christmas day.
Between now and the launch of X-Box/GameCube, though, I think we will see a drastic shift in sales figures, once Sony are producing enough machines. Once those other two machines are available, though, who knows what will happen!
