The story is rather simple – you are a trained assassin that must find out information of various targets and then kill them using the information to your advantage. There are a few twists and surprises in the story that I'll not spoil – it does create quite an interesting story to play through and sets up nicely for a few sequel games.
As you gather information on your target you can work out different ways to go after them – use the stealthy approach and kill them without being spotted or get in and slaughter a bunch of guards too – it's your choice.
The player has a huge amount of freedom in the game to pretty much go anywhere and do each of the small objectives to gather information on each target as they wish. Climbing buildings and 'free running' around the huge cities is awesome and really does feel very special - a feature that works very well.
Graphically the game is superior to most games around. Looking over each city from the multiple viewpoints really is breath taking at times and shows just what is possible for next gen gaming.
The cities themselves are huge and have been modelled on historic information to make them as realistic as possible.
There are a few things I didn't like about the game – at times the combat system is a little bit of a let down. Assassinations look cool and so do most of the fighting but at times only one enemy will attack you out of a group of 6+ and it just doesn't feel right. Also the horse riding between cities is boring and could have been left out altogether – luckily after you visit each city you can skip the riding parts. Also more objectives and side missions would have been nice – with only a few before each assassination there isn't a lot else on offer once you've killed all your targets.
With that being said though it really is a very enjoyable game – it does take a little while to get into as the start of the game is a little odd but once you reach the first main city and start going after your targets things will start to pick up. It looks amazing, the ability to climb pretty much any building and interact with your environment is outstanding and shows just how far games have come in recent years.
Assassins Creed really is one of those must play games, whether you buy it, rent it or borrow it from a mate I urge you to play through it till you reach the first city and see how special it is for yourself. It may not offer any replay value or be the most enjoyable game you've ever played but there is something different and special about it that makes it stand out from the crowd.
