Which and why?
1- "Sittin' on the Dock of The Bay" Otis Redding.
Because it is one of the most perfect songs ever recorded.
Can be wistful, happy, sad. Doesn't matter what your mood is, Redding's voice is exactly how you are feeling. And nobody can listen to it without whistling the end bit. And getting it out of tune
2 - "7 Jam" Clutch
Because it's everything I love about Clutch.
Heavy, nonsensical lyrics, fantastic rythm to it and ends in a 4-5 minute jam (hence the title). Dirty blues/rock with attitude and style left over to spare. Always, always lifts my spirits however foul my mood.
Fallon hollering with his double-tracked vocals about "That old ship of Zion is taking way way out into outer space and everything's gonna be alright...YEAH!"
3 - "Harvest of Sorrow" Metallica
Because it's Metallica at their best. Slow, menacing rock with a snarl and a middle-finger. And it has Hetfield doing a feral rock growl before the solo. Is everything that they used to be and everything they need to be again.
The one song where their rubbish tubby drummer uses the toms to a decent effect instead of disguising his shoddy time keeping skills.
4 - "Voodoo Chile" Jimi Hendrix
For the intro.
That simple. The wah-wah coming up from a fade, the kick drum punctuating the riff, then the "Thwunk" of everything getting ready before it lurches off into one of the greatest riffs ever written on a guitar. Excessive wah-wah solo and a bass that runs through your gut. And lyrics that make you realise that Jimi is the biggest, baddest and meanest axe-slinger to ever burn his guitar "Well I stand up next to a mountain and I chop it down with the edge of ma hand.."
5 - "Refuse/Resist" Sepultura.
Again, the intro makes this for me. Heartbeat of Max's son in-utero before it thumps in with the drum pattern.
And what sounds like "Godzilla" being screamed way way back in the mix just before the guitars boot in.
Double-kick rolls this monster along right before, at 0:49 that tribal bellow comes in with "Chaos AD, Tanks on the street".
Absolutely raw, shredded barbed-wire guitar sound and Max shouting himself stupid against the atrocities committed in the favelas of Brazil and other 3rd world countries.
Rage distilled into tribal rock.
Perfect.

So that's my 5.
My fav song ever, Duritz voice while singing, his lyrics, the simple guitars and drum sounds... Everything about this track reeks goodness.
2) Counting Crows - Omaha
Utter brilliance, it has a fantastic melody all the way through andDuritz voice is still so funning perfect.
3) Counting Crows - Long December.
I've not played this to one person who've said they don't like it. It's got a beautiful piano thingy going on all troughout it, and has simply rocks.
4) Counting Crows - St Robinson In His Cadillac Dream
It's upbeat and hella catchy. I can't really say more aobut it, but it lifts me whatever mood I'm in and I simply can't help singing along. Oh and it contains the lyric "I may not go to heaven, I hope you go to hell"
5) Johnny Cash - One
Yes, it's a cover of the U2 song, but it's better. His voice is so good on it, it sounds like he really means what he's singing. A guitar and Johnny Cash's voice is all that is in this track. Oh, and it has some the supremest lyric writing ever, Bono rocks.
I have a new mission now. I'm going to download pretty much all of the tracks you lot have just mentioned.
First - Otis Redding.
Because it's my favourite song of all time, probably. Everything I love about Lifehouse all rolled into one song. Excellent guitar, brilliant lyrics. Excellent song.
2 Khaled - Alech Taadi
Thanks to Turbonutter for introducing me to this one. It's the cab music from The Fifth Element. I include it for no other reason than it always cheers me up to listen to it.
3 Weezer - Crab
By far my favourite Weezer track. No wait, Simple Pages is quite good. It's good emo, basically, better than the cheesy stuff JEW have given us on Bleed American.
4 Counting Crows - Omaha
Got hooked on the CCs by RBS, but this remains my favourite track of theres. So melodic, all the way through.
5 Britney Spears - Hit Me Baby One More Time
...
Low budget Cliff orientated home video.
Yes, Breadfan.
Got that on "Garage Days Revisited" CD.
Fantastic riff, top song.
Favs on that double-CD
Breadfan
Last Caress
So What?
Am I Evil?
Old Metallica rocks.
I'm going out at lunchtime to get Cunning, and Justice back on CD (only have cassette).
GOddamit, why they turn so bad?
Have you heard 'Breadfan'? Its a b-side to 'Harvester'. Its a cover by a band called Budgie. The guitarists son used to work for my old man and he'd never heard the 'tallica version of that tune until I played it to him.
I have since met Budgie in the flesh and they told me their record company duped them when agreeing Metallica could play Breadfan and Crash Course in Brain Surgery. They have not seen one penny which is a shame because the amount of live albums/dvd's those tunes have been on would have made them exceedingly rich.
Soon I will get round to my 5 favourite tunes.
Drums thump it to a stop.
Pause
Gob/Spit
Pause
More Pause
"...ALL have said their prayers...."
Top rock moment.

Mostly old rock.
I must buy this.
Damn this is tough, as current favourites often find a place in, I don't tend to have songs that stick with me, but here goes.
Blur: Coffee and TV
Because Coxon rules, and I could listen to this song and chuckle, being so far away from society.
"Do you feel like a chain store? Practically floored"
Super Furry Animals: Arnofo/ Glo in the Dark
Because it's a song that makes me smile, and would remind me of my wife.
Pulp: The Night That Minnie Timberley Died
This is a current one, but I've had this album 6 months, and not felt the need to remove it from the CD player yet. This song is one of the ones I could listen to over and again, typical Pulp storytelling song, sounds upbeat, but is rather nasty. Also features the lyric "Pauncy but dangerous"
The Bluetones: Bluetonic
It's not even my favourite Bluetones song, but I love the lyrics. "No challenge should be faced without a little charm and a lot of style"
Baddiel, Skinner & the Lightning Seeds: Three Lions
I'm probably including this because I was reading about it the other day, which reminded me about the summer of 96, when we were nearly the best in Europe. A real anthem from a great summer. I guess the forthcoming world cup has also swayed my judgement today!
A couple of those songs would forever stay on the list, or maybe I'd have a different song from the same band, as usually it's an album, or a mix-tape I've made that these songs are taken from, and they remind me of stuff.
Its just fitting cos as their playing most of the audience are rather strickly being kept in line by the Russian army with their battons etc.. but by the end the Reds are singing along.. worth buying just for that moment.
And there's a great Hetfield 'Pause, snort and phlegm' moment just after the solo finishes.
THAT is rock.
