Cancelling things as a sign of respect is the worst idea i have ever heard. Why cancel football matches if some one famous dies or there is a big tragedy dies its completely pointless nothing is gained through this. Instead of cancelling horse racing on saturday for the queen mum it would be much more sensible to have you minutes silence and dedicate the event to their memory, what is the point in cancelling things, what is gained. For example instead of cancelling as a sign of respect the, racetracks should give a percentage of the gate reciepts and bookies could say give a percentage of their profits/proceeds for that day to charities dear to the person in question. The deceased in noway benefit from these cancellations which are in many respects unlinked to the death, it would be fair enough to cancel a formula 1 race if one of the racers died in warm up but in most situations the fact that something has happened doesn't mean that everything else must stop.

but please tell me what is gained as in your example of GAD being cancelled on sept 11. It would be far more meaningful if the £40 or whatever it is was donated to a charity supporting the victims of september the 11th.

I share the perspective of A5h1ey, I thik that he is right in this situation - why compound the loss of whoever/whatever by spending the whole day doing nothing and thinking about it?

I was the one who suggested last year at cancelling GAD for September 11th 2001 as so many people had died in that terrible tradgedy.

But you can't keep cancelling things year after year because if you did so, nothing would ever go ahead!

I can understand cancelling GAD on the day that the ews has been publically released about famous people or terrible tradgedies happening, however doing it on the anniversary every year wouldn't work.

i have lost people close to me in the past, but massive events with no connection weren't cancelled then. It is not judged on the value of a life it is done on the person. are you saying the queen mums life is more valued than that of my 18 year old cousin who died last year. I personally think my loss is far more tragic as my cousin had his whole life ahead of him but the queen mother had lived longer than anyone has any right to respect. I believe in respecting the dead and giving all due respect to them but the cancellation of events has no benefit to them. The families of the dead do not gain through those being cancelled as they are just gestures, a heart felt condolence from some one is far more meaningful.

I wonder if you would feel the same way if someone you knew and loved was killed or injured in a tragedy. I'm sure you would have the exact same attitude.
