With Christmas coming up, a few posts have started floating around about which console they should buy. So I thought I'd do a post about the X-Box and what it has to offer for those that are looking into owning one. :-)
This is gonna be pretty long so I'll split it into sections to make it easier to read. So for all those interested, this is what Microsoft bring with the X-Box...

The Console...
At the moment, the X-Box is the most powerful console of the 3 choices and has some excellent features that offer various options in gaming. Heres the things you can look forward to in purchasing the X-Box console.

The Hard Drive.
No memory card required to save your games as you can save them directly to the hard drive of the console. The only time you'll want a memory card is if you're taking your game saves to a friends house.
The hard drive also makes games such as Blinx and Fable possible on a console. Things like Blinx's use of rewinding and recording moments are simply not possible on the other 2 consoles. Same goes for Fable - you could be walking around a village, go upto a young resident and cut their face in a fight. As time passes in the game, you could return to the village and find that resident not only looking older, but having a scar from where you cut them - and they'll remember it was you who did it !
If you're an FPS fan, you'll probably know about things such as disappearing bodies and blood. With the X-Box's hard drive, this can be dealt with and enemy bodies will litter a battlefield, bullet holes will stay in the walls and damage to the enviornment will reamin.
This is a minor thing at first, but when you think of the battlefield scenes that are possible, you can imagine the increase of atmosphere in these types of games thanks to that little effort added in.

Use Your Own CD Tracks.
A number of games (particularly racing games), allow you the chance to use your own music tracks in them instead of the music the developers put in. Simply upload your favourite tracks onto the hard drive of the console and when you put in the games supporting this option, you will be able to listen to your own music in the background without sacrificing other sounds in the game such as the speech and sound effects.

Link Up Play.
4 players can enjoy multiplayer games together on an X-Box without having to purchase an adapter. If you have friends with X-Box's though, 4 player games can become 16 player games !
You'll be able to have huge multiplayer games on titles such as Halo and Timesplitters 2. For every X-Box you link up, you get another 4 players into a multiplayer (depending on how many players a title supports).

Online Experience With X-Box Live.
This is the place you'll be able to really test your skills in your favoutire games, or just have a great time playing with other players from around the world. The service will also have downloads available for certain games, wether its new costumes in a beat em up, new characters in an RPG, new cars in a racing game or a new level in an FPS.
X-Box Live will be by far the best online service available on any of the 3 consoles with Microsoft pumping $2 billion into it. Its a closed network which makes it practically impossible for hackers to ruin things - and even then, they have to get past Microsoft's huge online security. Microsoft have certainly spared no expense with this service.
You will be able to take part in huge 32 player FPS games at any time and even play a part in a massive online RPG such as Star Wars: Galaxies with thousands of players doing their own thing.
All this means that X-Box Live will be broadband only as Microsoft are determined to make online gaming a success and to offer the amount that X-Box Live does, a dial up modem simply isn't good enough.
Of course not everyone has broadband right now, but it really is the only way for online gaming to truly work because if you try to run things on modems, the experience will not only be slow and smaller, but also dogged with lag.
Everyone on X-Box Live will go by one name for all games, which means that knowone will be able to act like a prat under one name in an attempt to ruin things for people, then simply change to another later. Troublemakers can also be reported to Microsoft and dealt with. To make sure beginners can enjoy the service just as much as experts, there will be a matchmaking service that helps you to find players of similar skill as you so that you're not thrown into the middle of a bunch of pro players and murdered within seconds of appearing. You will also have a buddy list so that as you meet people online or have friends that are on the service, you will be able to see if they are on and what they are playing at anytime and join in by messaging them. If they are playing a different game to you, you can simply switch games, it will all be very easy and straightforward.
All X-Box Live games will support the head set so that you can constantly communicate with other players - much better than having to attempt to type on a keyboard without getting killed in the process. You will also be able to change your voice and make yourself sound completely different to other players. And for any annoying encounters, you can also mute a player so you don't have to listen. ;-)
Apparently, another neat feature is the way things sound as you play certain games. In an RPG for instance, you could be talking in a cave and the players voices will actually echo ! Cool ! :-)
Once you're on broadband, getting onto X-Box Live for a years subsription will cost you £39.99. In this package you get the disc to activate your X-Box's online capabilities, the head set and 2 games - Moto GP and Whacked.
An excellent package for just £39.99.

DVD Playback.
For around £20 you can buy the DVD playback kit. This allows you to watch DVD films on your X-Box and the picture is very high quality too.

5.1 Surround Sound.
The X-Box supports Dolby Digital 5.1. So if you have this or have the money for it (some systems are pretty cheap to pick up), you can listen to your games in glorious surround sound. You won't believe how different games can sound until you play the likes of Halo in DD 5.1. :-)

Not Sure About The Standard Controller ?
Not everyone likes the standard controller that comes with the console - claiming its too big. In response, Microsoft are bringing out the Controller S which is smaller and has a few of the buttons relocated elsewhere to make them easier to reach. Personally I'm happy with the standard controller, but I've seen this alternative and its an excellent controller. :-)

Now, the games. As a number of people know by now, Rare, the company that brought games such as Goldeneye, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie have signed up to make games exclusively for the X-Box. Sega have also recently announced that they will be bringing a number of their classic games to the console. So expect to see the likes of names such as Streets Of Rage, GoldenAxe and Sonic among them as these have to be some of the most well known Sega Classics ever.

Heres a list of games currently available for the X-Box along with upcoming titles. I'll split them into catagories to make it easier to look through for your favourite types...

Microsoft are getting more titles for the X-Box all the time, so expect to see a lot more announcements after Chrismtas. As for what titles are available now, this will change as the weeks pass so more titles will be available depending on when you read this. ;-)

Hope this has helped anyone looking into buying an X-Box. :-)

Personally, I think that, for the first time ever, there's room for three consoles in this industry. Nintendo will never pull out - due to the roaring success of their Game Boy handheld series, and the steady progress of the GameCube. They also make some cracking games too, and it's just naive to call them rehashed.

> mario sunshine = mario 64
> mario party 4 = mario party 3
> and the same sort of games from other companys

Mario Sunshine's an all new platformer - totally different to Mario 64, what with it's inventive landscapes and new gameplay elements such as FLUDD. It may not be particularly original, but it's damn innovative, which is the next best thing.

The Mario Party series is great for multiplayer, and has some brilliant ideas too - so if Nintendo want to bring that to the next generation, adding all new playing areas and mini-games while utilising the power of the 'Cube, fair play to them.

> rogue leader = rogue squadron
> resident evil = very Rehashed game hmm

One of the Rogue Leader series' strong points, is almost perfectly recreating the Star Wars experience. If better graphics, sound and speed can do that - then what's wrong with releasing a sequel? I have both games, and the both have different levels and added extas. As for Resident Evil, yes, it's a remake, but it's said to be twice the original in terms of extras (think new endings, areas to explore, bosses, etc) and power.

> resident evil 0
> resident evil 4

These two are brand new, and totally original and exclusive to the GameCube. CAPCOM themselves have stated that it won't just be a shoddy sequel, and the other remakes will be worth buying again too.

> have i made my point you people take the mickey out of ps2 owners
> about gta vice city becasue you say its the same as gta 3 yet you say
> resident evil is one of your best games but there are 6 of them and
> there all the same bloody thing i have played them all they are all
> basically the same

I HAVE a PS2, and Vice City WAS rushed out for Christmas - they could have done so much more with it, though to say it's the same game as GTA3 is a bit harsh. Seriously though, what's your problem with sequels? Just because some are bad, it doesn't mean to say they all are. We all know Halo 2's going to be a fantastic game, and probably quite innovative too - but won't you buy it just because it's a sequel?

> and why do you like the gamecube version is it because it has better
> graphics hold on a minute your the people who say it "sad"
> if you say a game is good becasue of the graphics ha what a
> contradiction

Resident Evil games rely almost solely on powerful graphics, speed and sound to create the full experience - with next generation technology, this almost makes it a whole new game. Plus, there's tonnes of additions to make it worth buying too.

I've noticed that throughout this post, you've failed to acknowledge games such as Pikmin, Doshin The Giant, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Starfox Adventures and more. Your argument is heavily flawed, really.

Fosbe - both of the games are RPG's. KOTOR is an offline game where you control a Jedi and the plot is set 4000 years before Episode 1 takes place. You will team up with various types of characters which will represent most of the well known races from the films and depending on how you act to the situations to the games, you could well be turned to the Dark Side. Apparently the game has plenty of moments where you're tempted to turn to the Sith. ;-)

As for Galaxies, again its an RPG but on a much larger scale. Its going to be online only so you will need X-Box Live to play it. I don't know how any story will be implemented into the game, but you will basically be given the chance to be any type of character from the Star Wars universe. You won't get to control the likes of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, etc, but you will be able to train as a Jedi or Sith (takes time though). Or you can be a bounty hunter, storm trooper, shop owner, etc. By the looks of it, you will have total freedom when it comes to developing your character. Looks like you can even be a Wookie or an Ewok. ;-)
On the movie I saw from the last E3 show, Boba Fett even appeared or at least a very similar looking character did.
Also from this movie and various screenshots, vehicles such as the AT-AT and the AT-ST made an appearance which leaves you wondering if you can get into the seat of some of them. ;-)
And of course with it being an MMORPG, you'll be playing alongside thousands of other players over X-Box Live.

Both games are looking to be 2 of the best Star Wars games ever, if not THE best.

I totally agree with Toms reply.

I have an Xbox, Excellent console, I chose to buy it and I like it. I'm buying a Gamecube soon, again I choose to buy it, no matter what anyone else says.

LOL love the way you say what areas x box and PS2 are good in and then just say gaycubes strongest point is it's 'original games'. i mean Mario in a platform game in 3d!!! well why didn't they do that before?

what you ment to say was the gamecube is strongest in 'kiddie plop games and tacky done before platform games with the odd resi game to give something for the parents to play while there baby ninty is in bed' :)

You're like one of those weirdo tramp type people on buses and trains aren't you. They stay quiet until suddenly something triggers them and they start talking a load of crap while stumbling around drunk.
Everyone stays calm but you know they just want the smelly mong to sod off at the next stop.

They're are definatly similarities.

Oh and as for the mascot thing, Microsoft don't particularly have one and you'll find that its not a required field in order to succeed.
That would be um, interesting wouldn't it.
"Hi, I'm making a console with excellent specs and top games !"
"Ok....And whose going to be your mascot ?"
"Mascot ? Um, don't plan on having one."
"Meh, then sorry but you can't come into the console industry."

At £130.00 a pop (now with Mario Sunshine at GAME), I find that hard to believe. The reason I like the GameCube is because there's something for everyone on there, though there are areas other consoles do better.
-----
The X-Box's strong point is online games, and first person shooters too - it's something the console's renowned for.

The Playstation 2's strong point is blockbuster games, usually action - Deus Ex, Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto.

The GameCube's strongpoint is original games, and it's also got the best platform and multiplayer selection too.
-----
Now you've put it a bit more rationally Tom, I see that some of my posts could have been a bit offensive and biased. All consoles have their strong points (as I've shown above) and I certainly wouldn't say no to an X-Box.

Let's put this behind us, eh? :D

By 'leave me alone' I was not only refering to the post you had just made. I was refering to the countless other posts you have made on the exact same subject.

While we're at it, I might as well get a few things off my chest. This is anyone it applies to.

In the sales figures post. You stated THQ were talking out of their rear ends by saying sales figures for the Xbox were increasing. You. Frikking. Moron. There are facts everywhere that say Xbox sales figures are increasing in the UK alone (I won't go into other countries as I'm not sure on the facts). Your statement about THQ talking out of their rear ends shows exactly how much you know on this subject.

Why must you insist on coming into the Xbox forum to talk about a different console? I recall asking you this before, and telling you off. If you want to blab on about how great the gamecube is, go into the Nintendo forum, where people CHOSE to buy a gamecube.

We've chosen to buy an Xbox (and some people other consoles aswell). We're all quite capable of making our own judgements about what consoles we want to buy. We certainly don't need you coming in here and telling us why you are right and we are wrong.

Because nobody's wrong. We're all right. We've all made the right decision for what we want. I don't want you telling me I don't have the intelligence to go out and do some research about what console suites ME.

I chose the Xbox and PS2. I don't have any need for the GC, as the titles I see on it don't justify the cost of the console.

And nothing you can say will change anybody's mind. If you constructed proper arguments like members such as er-no, Edgy and Wookieemonster, I would have tremendous respect for you, just like I do for them.

But you don't, and quite frankly, you're only ruining the Gamecube's image.

If and when I want to go and buy a Gamecube, I will. Just like anyone else here. I really don't see any point in you coming here and acting like a child when you've claimed in other posts that you have intelligence. USE IT.

Sorry for ranting.
