As the honeymoon period of the consoles launch is now over, and the sales figures are starting to drop away as many people (myself included) say, “I’ll get an Xbox when there’s a price drop”, will we see a price reduction for Microsoft’s giant black box coming soon I wonder?
I know it’s not that long ago since the Xbox was launched, but the wait for the Gamecube is almost over, and the huge price difference between that and Xbox will have to force Microsoft’s hand in dropping the price of their console.
If they don’t, then come May 3rd, Nintendo’s new console will bury them, as the attraction of a great console at a very low price and better games at cheaper prices will be too strong.
Then throw the PS2 into the equation and Microsoft will not sell a £300 console for very long, despite what sales figures or strategies they have worked out.
Pretty soon though, Microsoft will be running scared of Nintendo and Sony as punters flock to the cheaper machines so a reduction in the price will come, maybe sooner rather than later?
But the question is when will the price drop?
Before may 3rd? After May 3rd?
It needs to stay as it is until nearer to Xmas, or it will ruin it's image.
If I'd waited, I would have got less money when selling my PS2, so I would have had to pay out the same (about £100 on top of what I got for my PS2).
So all in all I'm not bothered if they drop the price.
In fact, I hope they do. The more people that buy the console the better, as far as I'm concerned...
Nintendo didnt make a lot of people happy when they did it so soon after the N64 launch.
And a price drop is good for everyone (except those people who got it at launch--i have sympathy as i got the N64 for £250, a few months later it went down to £150)
Microsoft will want to have a lower price run-in I imagine, rather than dropping the price on the release date of the Gamecube and facing direct competiton.
It's all a question of whether they want to squeeze every last penny out of the higher price, or want to shift units. I imagine the latter is more pressing and more profitable, so the cut'll probably come before the Gamecube release date.
