I bring this topic up in this forum because it seems to attract quite an educated following, so I would like it if you could indulge me with the reason that we have the Newbie/Regular/Notable hierarchy, and what this actually signifies?

I say this because it seems very similar to the old Indian caste system, with the Untouchables, etc. What does a Regular actually do? Why is this arcane class system here? What is the whole *thing* about the SR forums I'm yet to get? Do Newbies win GAD? Are they prejudiced against? What am I misunderstanding?

I'm sure this topic has been brought forward before, but how would I know, I'm only a Newbie. Is discretion used much in this forum to decide GAD, status, banned members, swearing etc? One could get the impression the SR forums are a combination of Stalinist Russia, with a tightly-controlled hierarchy that pass judgement, and McCarthyist America, with reporting being the SR equivalent of calling someone a Commie.

That is all.

Hmmm, maybe not xenophobic...

Unless I'm really missing something. This is the Recovering Alcoholics Chatroom, isn't it?

By the way, I'm getting rather addicted to ebay. It really is that good. Help me.

Seeing insightful, interesting posts such as this from newbies is rare. Which is a pity. But people who write crap, luckily, don't tend to hang around.

And thus those who qualify as Regular (purely through a word/post count filter) are more likely to be posting stuff that's worth reading. It just saves us some time. It also makes us look like xenophobic, prejudiced gits.

Regulers are people who have posted a certain amount of words.

Noteables are people who post well.

Your rank does not affect your GAD chance. The quality of your writing does.

Did no one ever tell you not to mix your metaphors you stinkin' newbie ;-)

hehe..

The system does work quite well, it helps to distinguish those people who have been at the site a while, and therefore have contributed, from those who haven't. The notables, in my opinion, are given their title because it keeps them at the site. There's not many of them and all of them are brilliant posters, so it's in SR's interest to keep them here.

Your post was a myriad of allusions, but you really shouldn't mix your metaphors; it's just not cricket.

The whole thing just shows how loyal you have been and just shows how much you post here.
Newbies can win GAD's.
SR choose everything what happens as far as banning and picking of GAD's and everything basically.
Notables are the popular people who some people like or liked.

You just have to post good and you will be recognised soon enough.
