my mistake :-)
I remember seeing some sort of making of where Hackman was talking about it.

Yes, I thought that way too until the booklet that came with the DVD informed me that Perkipsy was in fact Ploughskeepie :-)
But the French cop guy was likeable enough.

The fact that the first film was obviously better made me like Popeye, and so I found the second film a bit disappointing because it made me dislike him. I also thought it was a bit triggerhappy with the explosions and action, whereas the first one was understated. It didn't have the superb car-chase and the ending was, well I won't say anything because Grix hasn't watched it yet. Overall I prefer the first one and, though the second one isn't bad in itself, it and 90% of all films look bad compared to the original.
"Then I'm gonna work on your arms. Set 'em over a curb and use 'em as a trampoline. Yeah you'd like that huh? And what about your kneecaps. I'm gonna make oatmeal outta your f***in' kneecaps!"
Gene Hackman is great. For some reason though, my brother hates him. Well, he likes him in Enemy of the State but the first thing he saw him in was Crimson Tide and he hates that film. That basically means he dislikes him in everything. :-D
Worth watching for Gene Hackman's acting though, and it does provide a far more acurate portrayal of the real Popeye Doyle (a racist, xenopobic womaniser) than the original did.
Some people prefer it to the original but others, like me, don't.
Make sure you watch Mark Kermode's BBC documentary. It's brilliant simply because the entire production team and actors all hate each other really.
Arsey. I've still got French Connection 2 to watch mind. First one was superb.
