Bad guys eh, possibly one of the most influential characters that appear in game that uses them, after the main character that is. These are the people that want to take over the world, launch a nuke, kill a foe and so on, they are the puss that runs out of the wounds of the earth, and at times they are damn annoying.

Many different games have used and made bad guys move, act and look in many different ways. What this really depends on though is the type of game that there in. We could go on and on about all the different bad guys that appear in games, there are hundreds with the likes of a certain use of zombies in one series. But these are not the ones im talking about here, im talking about the main ones, the heads of the gang, the all knowing and usually very sick ones. The masterminds of the operation, and this is my insight into some of the best top men of evilness out there.

One thing that a common bad guy has in common with all the others is usually there aims, how many times have we seen the scenario of someone wanting revenge or wanting to take over the world being used in games and films too. Maybe the developers can’t think of anything new, but it’s a fact that they all want the same thing. But that’s where the common things usually stop between the enemies of gamers, after this, depending on the type of game they take a huge turn in their character.

Perhaps the most important thing when making an enemy in a game is there appearance, after all, no one is going to play along with a story when the main bad guy is a gun totting fluffy bunny are they? These people need to look the part. More often than not these people have a large array of weapons on there persons, which makes sense, as there are hated so there going to have to be able to defend themselves. Here clothes are usually made of dark colours too that show the dark side of them truly be put on show, again, how many bad guys have you seen wearing multi colour sweat shirts? As for there physique, the majority of them are big built, and usually tower above the main character, they have to show that they mean business and when they have the looks of the likes of Solidus Snake then you know they mean trouble. But it’s not only this that shows what there made of, most of them are very skilled in some sort of act.

You know the type, all of them seem to have one sort of special attribute or something such as the likes of Vamp from MGS2. He had un human powers such as running on water and lightning fast movements. Then there are the likes of Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 who must be one the strongest and hardest to kill ever, throughout the game he follows you all the time, and just when you think that you have killed him, pops back up he does, at times these people just wont die. These powers are the one thing that separates the bad guy from the good guy, without them they are just a regular character with an evil heart, these powers make them that bit more interesting.

Personality is also another big factor, this being showed by their voice, words they use and how they go about things, the ambition they have. Of course, to be the evil master they must be black hearted as no one would listen to someone who acted like Graham Norton. They have to show there allies whose boss, use big words and shout a hell of a lot, and at times, they may even have to kill to show the others there not afraid to be vigilant. The bottom line is, they have to act down right bad. There voice is a lot more assertive being loud and rough, striking fear through anyone who hears it so that they follow every word that he mutters, and most of them do. Bad guys also have to show that they have no fear and set a good example for the rest of there empire, no wonder so many of them get killed when they constantly come up against the likes of some of the best know goodies of the land. There ambition to succeed is shown throughout the game, never giving up till they breath there last ounce of oxygen…talk about stamina.

One crucial thing though, again that they all have in common, is that more often than not they always fail to carry out what they intended to finish. How many times have you seen the bad guy win? They always get there comeuppance, and deservedly. Why? Well, there would not be much to a story if the world this time did get blown up creating and internal vortex in the universe sucking everyone and everything in ending all that was known, would there, where is the sense in that? The fact is that it’s a hard life for a bad guy, they have to accept that nothing will go their way, and that’s life.

In my mind, all of the above has to be thought about for a bad guy to be believable in a game, if there going to strike fear into those around them and to be able to show that they can control there army, they really do have to look the part. Most games do get there characters right, and they always seem to fit with the games setting and so on, and so they should, as they are, arguably one of the most important people in the game.

People always remember the best bad guy, and so they have to show what they can do, and what better way than to cause a few deaths and big explosions, and the best way to be remembered is go out with a bang and a good scene, cue most of the Final Fantasy endings.

So, tell me, which are your most memorable foes?
