Okay, so that's fibbing a bit, but it is a View Askew picture, and I bet loads of you haven't seen it. It's called Drawing Flies and it was made just before Clerks in 1996. Kevin Smith was the executive producer, which basically means he gave two of his friends some money to direct it (Malcolm Ingram and Matt Gissing) which they did. It's shot in black and white, and has loads of your favourite View Askew actors in it, including Jason Mewes, Jason Lee, Renee Humphrey, Joey Adams and yes, even a little Silent Bob.

It's rubbish. Well, it's not rubbish, it's just really badly acted, badly scripted and doesn't go anywhere. It's about 5 losers who get their Welfare benefit cut off and are forced to find alternative ways to find rent. After a fruitless search, Jason Lee's character Donner decides that the gang should all go and stay in his uncle's cabin in the woods, although it becomes clear that he has an ulterior motive. Before they leave, Donner has a dream that he meets Bigfoot, and the whole purpose of the trip is to discover Sasquatch and make a load of money. Cue lots of paranoia, humourous drunken scenes in front of a camp fire and the usual teen-in-woods shocks that don't really work.

The best thing about Drawing Flies is definitely Jason Lee, proving that he actually can hold his own and act properly (something else he has recently proved in movies like Vanilla Sky). If you thought Mewes was a bad actor - which, let's face it, he is - then you really don't wanna see this picture. His lines are probably the worst in the entire movie and he delivers lines more wooden than the trees that surround him. Carmen Lee plays the 'feisty' chick Cassidy, she's pretty good but the script just sucks, massively. I'm also pretty sure I've seen her in other View Askew flicks but I can't think where.

Anyway, the film doesn't really go anywhere, it has a really predictable ending, and halfway through, we see a field full of nappy-wearing men, which is never really explained. It totally comes across as a student movie, which I guess it was, but it's no excuse with these actors. Lee is the sole redeeming feature, but if you want to watch Jason Lee making jokes and talking loudly, you'd do better with Mallrats. Still, if you're a View Askew nut, then you'll probably wanna check it out (go to www.viewaskew.com to buy it from the US). I've seen worse films, but I expected more with Kevin's name on the box. Screw this, I'm going to watch Mallrats.
