If I can't get through to these playstation repair bods by the end of the day, I think I'm going to navigate to call forwarding and queues of the dreaded Sony company number, and see if they have any about (no doubt for extortionate prices).
Any repairs that can be performed at an electrical repair shop would only be makeshift, they could replace the carriage completely, but then the charges they'd give you would pretty much match that of a new laser - hence my opting for the latter. The newer PS One laser units, which are all that's really available anymore, are more hardy than the ones that came with the original system, so I've been trying to get hold of one of those and an extension ribbon cable for it.
