Being quite mature, we can make our own decisions when living our lives, buying stuff and basically giving everything we do a bit of though. Fair enough sometimes we make wrong decisions, but its a part of being human.Hows this connected to games then? Well when we were younger, most of us went alongwith the masses. If the new cereal you have seen on TV was popular with your mates, you would want to get it to. It was the same for most forms of media, entertainment and other needs.

Now that most of us are old enough to make their own decisions and consider all the facts before carrying out a task or buying something, we do not need to go with the masses. So is the case with the PS2's new fighting games Virtua Fighter 4 and Tekken 4.

Those of us who have not been lucky (or unlucky) to own a Dreamcast may not be very familiar with the recent VF games. With the series starting out on the Saturn, and considering the sort of 80:20 split between the Playstation and the Saturn, the series were mostly ignored by many.

Tekken on the other hand became one of the biggest franchises on the Playstation. It offered many fighters, good graphics and great gameplay. Tekken was always more of an arcade beat-em up rather than a simulation. But with the series appearance on the PS2, the masses have kinda quieted down. The game was quite average and hardly offered any improvements on the successful Tekken 3 on the PSone. Namco admitted that this was sort of an "update" that included all the characters from the series with the proper sequel to Tekken 3 to follow a couple of years after.

Virtua Fighter 4 has been in development for 3 years and the quality of the game shows the determination of the team. The graphics are crisp and the effects are fantastic. The lack of fighters is probably the games only fault at the moment. It will take ages to master, with the control system being very simple and fluid, but still requires hours of practice to get used to the characters moves and be able to get the most out of the characters. Plus the advantage of every characters fighting style being closely based on a real life martial art, VF 4 is a Pro Evo of the fighting games.

But the point still stands. Tekken 4 has already hit the Japanese shores and the UK release is to follow in a few months time. The game is impressive, but againmany magazines cant help but feel its more of the same. New fighters, new mini-game and new moves should attract the fansof the series though.

So Virtua Fighter 4 is clearly a better game if you look at the media reviews around the world. It offers the player more control and satisfaction than before, but (and I am sad to say this as much as I like Tekken) Tekken will most liekly outsell VF4 by a mile. Again it all comes down to a multi-million pound franchise and Namco are again the favourites to sweep the cash.

Now I am not meaning to say anything bad about Tekken 4 but just like with FIFA many people will simply ignore VF4 and pay their hard-earned £40 for something that may be good but not the optimal choice of a hardcore gamer. People simply seem to be ignoring the advice of the media and still decide to go out and buy big-francise titles, in the mean-time ignoring superior games.

We are old enough to have our right to make a choice. But why is it that so many of us cant seem to make the right choice, or take an eternity to finally realise where they went wrong. I for one am conscious of what the magazines have to say and the features that games offer. I do not longer go with the masses like I did about 5 years ago. I do not have to feel that I am an outcast because I havnt got THAT particular game or THAT particular brand of trainers. But for many tthe ability to be independent is still not a reality....

Discuss :)

Surely some of you will have played Soul Blade on psx though so will be aware of the formula and some of the gameplay style ?

I'm a massive beat 'em up fan myself, and I have to say that VF4 and T4 cannot be compared- they are totally different games.

Quite rightly Tekken 4 will have far more sales, but for the wrong reasons. What I mean by that statement is this: T4 was made to be a popularistic button bashin arcadey game that doesn't need any thought. It actually deserves to get better sales because it's perfect for casual gamers. However, it won't get sales because of this: it'll get them because it's a "Tekken" game.

VF on the other hand os a far more complex game, that is aimed at the hardcore fighting fan. It won't appeal to the massmarket as much, and thus won't get the sales. If, however, Sega brought out a good new version of Fighting Vipers, then that would/should sell far better.

Anyway, as a fighting fan I'll be buying them both, and probably SC2... all I need is the money!

Well nh, I have left out Soul Calibur 2 on purpose. Well partly on purpose. I also know that it is a very innovative approach on fighting games because you do not just have to use your fists. But I hope you see my point, you were the only one who realised that Soul Calibur 2 may have something in it to challenge the big guns. But again many of us will not be familiar with the game and inmy opinion (even though people are beginning to try out new staff) many will play it safe and stick with what they know and love...

As I said earlier - I didn't think Tekken tag was as bad as everyone is making out (But thats just my opinion!!) and enjoy it.

As for Soul Calibur - it really is streets ahead of Tekken all round - both of them are made by Namco and Yoshimitsu is in both games. All the characters in Sould Calibur have some kind of Weapon, Sword, Axe, Flail, Pole? etc. This gives it more varity when added to the usual punch, kick moves and it also has some excellent modes to extend the playability of it. Well worth trying out if you get the chance.

I have never played the Virtua Fighter games but I will probably rent VF4 when it comes out just to see what it is all about.

Well 26th April will see yet another Franchise win over quality - It will be a sad day for true gaming quality - yes it's the day that Fifa World Cup 2002 is released. No doubt it will sell by the truckload again but will it really change much - I very much doubt it.

At least people that use these forums will understand that true gameplay is vastly superior to the cheap and cheerful franchised products.

Hmm - think I'll get Monsters inc this weekend - ** no not the needle ** aarghh - fall's into gentle slumber zzzzzzzzz

I bought Tekken Tag when I first got my PS2, thought it was a good improvement over the original Tekken for the PSx.

*expects too be slagged off for that comment*

I still enjoy going back, especially in 2 player mode, take great delight it beating the crap out of my mate.

I've read some good reviews of VF4 and will probably be getting that instead of T4.

As for Soul Calibur, well I've never played it so I wont be making a comment about it.

Some good points about franchises etc there Triple H.

The discussion here seems to have centred on beat em ups and you are all missing one glaringly obvious thing.

SOUL CALIBUR.

I know you havn't all owned DC but those who have and who tried Soul Calibur will appreciate what a superb game it was and with the sequel coming to PS2 in September there will be another contender for the top spot.

I only bought Tekken Tag when it came out on platinum and I didn't think it was as poor as some people have made out.

Well, I am going for Virtua Fighter 4 no matter what. I heard too many nice things about the game, and considering Tekken 4 wont be with us till late summer/ early autumn, I wont haveto buy 2 fighting games at the same time.

Plus apparently the games are very different and by buying both games, you wont be feeling you are playing similar games....

Is Tekken 4 getting a proper conversion for us or is it gonna be 20% slower again? The PAL versions of Tekken are s***e. I'll be going for Virtua fighter 4 without doubt if I have to make a choice between the two.

Virtua Fighter 4 has actually got 9.3 from both IGN and gamespot.
