Firstly, thanks to you guys I have now got broadband and I am very happy. Thank you.

Next, my family want to connect this PC to the one downstairs which is much slower etc so that they can access the internet at the same time etc using the cable modem.

I have used a network before and know you can play multiplayer games and share printers etc but will I be able to access my ALL my folders and files which are on this PC from the one downstairs?

Also will this mean that I am sharing the hard drive downstairs so I will get more space up here as I can access their drive? Will the RAM for both PC's be combined so they both run faster?

What speeds can i expect if I am sharing internet connection with the PC downstairs (when i'm not downloading).

Thanks again,
MWA

I don't know too much about those questions but:

no you can't share your Ram, and:
you'll need to buy a router to share your modem between the two PCs (get a NetGear one) the sharing speed should be around 100Mbps (if your NICs are 10/100s - which you'll ned for the Broadband modem)

also, your downstairs PC will need to be a half decent spec, I don't think Broadbands any good on a 166Mhz and below, also 64Mb RAM minimum me thinks.

Assuming you're runnning Windows on both boxes, and if you already have a TCP/IP network set up (for gaming) you can share disk space, printers and your net connection, but not RAM (the latency over ethernet wouldn't be fun).

Storage and Printing you can achieve with Windows Networking. Mess with Network in the Control Panel.

For the connection sharing, you'll need something called ICS, which should come bundled with Windows 98 and later. Sorry, but I don't know off hand how to set it up -- I've never used it.

(Although I could tell you exactly how to set up 2.4.14+netfilter+iptables :)
