Okie doke. It's for my Interactive Media Web Authoring unit. The idea is that I identify a particular audience, research the needs of that audience (that's what this questionnaire is for), and then produce a prototype of a product based on the results of my research.

So the prototype project which I intend to do is a web-based guide on how to perform simple computer tasks to help those who are afraid of making their computers go wrong or believe that tasks are more complicated than they actually are. I guess, in a way, this is the wrong place to do it, because I know you're all not stupid, but hey - every little helps. :) And I have to show that I have researched a wide audience, and I know this place has members aplenty. :)

Please answer the questions for me. It'd be much appreciated.

Thanks. :)

6. What sorts of computer problems do you most frequently encounter?

7. How do you go about solving computer problems? eg. asking someone else to fix it, consulting the help file, looking up the problem on the Internet, etc.

8. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, how would you rate your computer skills?

In addition to what I said (which, to be fair, wasn't that insightful), something you might like to cover is some basic Windows security.

Its usually something like
-search on the internet

-whine to somebody that I cant fix my problem
-search some more
-find an answer

I think the whining about it is definitely the most important step for me.

Wasting time, uni stuff

Recently they involve the words "segfault" and not soon after, "malloc". Most of my problems are ones I create myself. This may void the rest of my questionnaire :P

I get off my fat butt (it's not really fat) and figure it out myself. The exact process depends what the problem is. There's usually a fair amount of Googling involved.

Hard to answer this. 10 in some areas, 0 in others. :P 0 is off the scale, awesome.

Teaching people to use Google instead of relying on vague generic help :P

Trying it for yourself is by far the most educational method but may well require text/demonstrations to get you into a position where you can.

Software conflicts, data corruption, hardware breakdown

15 minute rule. If I can't fix it myself in 15 minutes, I call in my all singing all dancing warrantee, and someone comes and fixes it for me for free.

Someone needs to shatter the illusion that if you change the wrong option, your PC will either explode, or permanently lock itself from any further user input. This is the reason behind user frigidity.

Text accompanied by pictures / diagrams works best. But you always have to try it yourself or it goes in one ear and out the other, so to speak.

Connection problems seem to be the usual one.

I'l generally try and fix it myself if i know how to. Then i'll start reading on the internet. Its rare that i'll ask for help unless its something i need quickly.
