Stop being a cheapoid, buy a Messiah or Messiah 2 chip, and get yousrself a DVD writer for your PC. A DVD Writer costs around £250, and blanks DVDs are around 60p each at the moment and falling, so you can have 1:1 backups without having to prat about booting up and worrying about TOC size.

Look, you've saved enough money by ripping off the games company already. Why not put those savings to good use and do it properly?

Oh, and for the benefit of others who read the long winded post below about TOC size, let me put it simply. TOC size is basically the amount of data on the CD/DVD. To find out the TOC of any game, just put the game into a normal PC drive and look at its properties. Here's the simple bit:

"If the game you are trying to boot FROM has a TOC size smaller than the game you are trying to boot, it will not work"

It therefore stands to reason that a game on an 80 minute CD will not boot from a game on a 70 minute CD (assuming both are full). You can buy special CDs (70, 80, 90 minute etc.) all prepared to be compatible with and used for PS2 backup booting. These don't contain games as such, but are just full of data that the PS2 recognises.

Get Messiah though!!!!!

The size of the *media* (80 min or 74 min) has nothing to do with whether a game will load on the Neo 2.2. As someone else has already said, although the answer as a whole was incorrect, the Neo 2.2 suffers from a TOC limit of 650MB – this is the same for a number of other mod chips out there.

So it is *not* the size of the CD-R that is the problem, it’s the TOC size of the game that is burnt onto it. Your chipped PS2 has no idea whether it is using a 74 or 80 min CD, what it looks at is the Table Of Contents, and if this is bigger than 650MB (roughly the size of the Action Reply CD TOC file) it won’t work.

However, the reason it may *seem* like 80 min CD-R’s are the root of your problems is that invariably, the bigger the TOC file, the bigger the game, and the bigger games come on 80 min CD-R’s because they need the extra space. If a game won’t fit on a 74 min CD-R, and therefore requires an 80 min CDR, you can bet any money that the TOC will be more than 650MB. If you burnt a game with a TOC of around 460MB onto an 80 min CDR, it would work perfectly.

Note – I could go into *why* the incorrect sized TOC file will prevent you from booting a game if you really want but I fail to see the point at this stage.

CD-R size means nothing – TOC size if the defining factor.

So how do you know which games have a TOC file of more than 650MB? Well if you’ve got a Neo 2.2 and a prepared to rip of the games business, you can find this info out for yourself. ;-)
