At the moment however I really can’t see this happening at all, and in my opinion at the moment and for the foreseeable future, both the X-box and GC are going to be playing catch up. Obviously with the PS2 being out for more than a year already it has a very large user base already and its continuously always growing throughout the week. With the recent price cuts this has more than helped Sony in that respect, being the cheapest of the next gen consoles they always knew it was going to shift many consoles that way. Just here on the forums you could tell that, even the once loyal fans of the other consoles at times were changing there mind and going for the PS2, it was a very slick strategy by Sony. With it already being out a while there are already many games too, and many good games at that available for you to buy and it gets better when they announce that the likes of GT 3 are coming out at £19:99, its all good for them, and because of this I think that GC and X-box are going to be playing catch up.
At this moment in time Sony have the real advantage. At the start of the competition that really begins tonight they already have a huge user base and lots of games out to entice new gamers, and in real terms, they should not loose much ground to the other consoles because of this. But what I really hope is that they don’t show any signs of weaknesses and start to use their money and the number of there developers to their advantage. There were reports at one time when the GC and X-box were showcasing abroad that Sony had put much money into telling developers to go for graphics rather than game play, whether this was totally true im not sure, but the thing is I hope that they don’t have to start to resort to this in order to keep ahead of the pack. Usually the first thing a new gamer looks at when there after a new console is the graphics, so you can see the sense in having the games have lots of good graphics and not so good game play, all the customers are sure to go for this then. But the problem is then that with the dire game play that would come with it, is that they would not stay loyal to the console for long, and turn else where for there games.
Most importantly, I hope that Sony do not put pressure on the developers to put there games which have a good prospect to release them quickly to sell more games. This would have a bad effect on the games without a doubt, and could cause them to be severely damaged and different to how they could have been. Also then we could be bombarded with many low quality titles that are not so good at all and are just released to overwhelm us rather than entertain.
But as we know, Sony are bright people and have soon learnt how to handle the market, after all they have had so much success with the PS1 and its war with DC and N64, im sure they know what they are doing and will come out of the competition very well off. I have no doubt that the GC and the X-box are going to be very good consoles, they both have there own styles of games that many people like and enjoy, and I cant see that they are not going to do well for themselves either. All 3 will offer some good games which is what we want, but the fact is that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are in the business to make money, and to do that you have to be the dominant console in the market to make the most profit. Sony are a big company and I really hope that they can continue to keep the good games rolling onto the console and not use any bad and harmful tactics to keep there dominance in the market, and this is something that i am confident that they can do, if i wasnt, i would be sat here now telling you how excited i am about the X-box release.
