I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how a Web Server, works differently fron a normal PC??
I mean, I know Servers can be accessed 24/7, but are the same Servers on all the time??? or do they switch from one to another every so often??
Just thinking a Server on all the time, would it not burn out or anything?? And if they are on all the time, how are they maintained from burnouts, etc...
I'm just curious, so if anyone could fill me in, I thank you. :o).
REJOICE!
Nice. :)

You need to use the same sort of things that you probabaly have on your PC right now. Firewalls, virus protection e.t.c.
Also, if it is possible, it is best to use a non-windows system as most hackers only know how to hack into windows. I am currently accessing the internet through a server that my Dad bult. Its nothing special, about 300Mhz, with about 64mb Ram and 1Gb HDD space. This meant it was quite cheap to make (it was actually parts out of an old PC, when we re-built the previous one to bring it into the 21st century.)
It runs on Linux, which means that it is very difficult to hack, and very stable.

LOL @ possibly!! and......*sigh*
most game servers now need

Thanks for the info so far though guys :o).
anyway, it would be very cool if lots of people started making their own servers, I can see it would save a lot of money on hosts, if it breaks down, I doubt too many people would be worried about it going down.
486s can run servers! :D cool
