As you were talking about hosting sites on your own computer, it got me thinking.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how a Web Server, works differently fron a normal PC??

I mean, I know Servers can be accessed 24/7, but are the same Servers on all the time??? or do they switch from one to another every so often??

Just thinking a Server on all the time, would it not burn out or anything?? And if they are on all the time, how are they maintained from burnouts, etc...

I'm just curious, so if anyone could fill me in, I thank you. :o).

I'm getting some Acorns soon to run as firewalls and maybe workstations (NetBSD or *maybe* Debian, not sure yet).

REJOICE!

Downstairs we have an old Mac running as a server... its got a great little package that if it ever does crash it keeps the filemaker program running when it turns itself back on automatically.

Nice. :)

Heh, I actually don't have a 486 Linux box, and probably never shall. Getting power to my toilet is a bit of a problem, y'see.

You need to use the same sort of things that you probabaly have on your PC right now. Firewalls, virus protection e.t.c.

Also, if it is possible, it is best to use a non-windows system as most hackers only know how to hack into windows. I am currently accessing the internet through a server that my Dad bult. Its nothing special, about 300Mhz, with about 64mb Ram and 1Gb HDD space. This meant it was quite cheap to make (it was actually parts out of an old PC, when we re-built the previous one to bring it into the 21st century.)

It runs on Linux, which means that it is very difficult to hack, and very stable.

A 486 could possibly run a network solitaire server...most game servers now need at least 256mb ram and an 800mhz+ cpu. Believe most major game servers are dual CPU, but it depends on the number of servers/clients you're trying to get that one machine to handle..

hehe, what do you think they used 5-6 years ago?? Although I must admit, I wouldn't trust any Windows server on a 486, but any UNIX-based server would rock, no doubt. (OK Turbonutter, don't go on about it!! ;) )

Being able to manage a server is a very useful skill, loads of jobs ask for server knowledge aswell as networking these days, i'm intrested in making a home ISP, pretty much next to no idea of how it would be shared out.

anyway, it would be very cool if lots of people started making their own servers, I can see it would save a lot of money on hosts, if it breaks down, I doubt too many people would be worried about it going down.

486s can run servers! :D cool
