Great Great A new version of Counter Strike, we got new maps, new skins the lot. Wot they didn't tell u was the fact that it has a function to slow u down when u jump, which is a playing Tactic in Counter Strike. So is this a good idea????? Post your opinions here!

This is how I understand it: CS 1.4 beta test is only avaliable to broadbanders because of the constant updates for it. The final, official release will be avaliable to everyone. One thing that makes CS so good is it's netcode, which allows 56kers to get such good gamplay out of it. My 56k can acheive pings of down to 130, and some people I know can get lower than that (with external modems). I don't think they'll start charging for it, it would just get silly, and would cause many gamers (me especially) to stop playing, I'd move to DoD, which is not currently owned by VALVe because it is still in beta testing stages. (apparently). VALVe pretty much own CS since it left beta stages, and I really doubt theyd start a pay system, It would only result in many more ametuer MOD makers making clones of CS and keeping them free. (Look at Tactical Ops for UT). This broadband only stuff is a myth, and highly improbable, caused by confusion throughout the beta testers. Well, anyway, we shall see, next week, it is due for release, but then... when have release dates ever been accurate? discuss, if your that interested. But not in this thread.

It's not a rumor, CS 1.4 uses steam, a new Valve method of letting users download games as they want to play them. I was testing CS 1.4 beta with it last night, and there's a lot more downloading of various things to be done - you don't /have/ to have broadband as such, but you'll be waiting a long time for downloads if you want.

Steam is also a subscription based service, I'm more worried that they'll start charging for subscriptions, as it's such a massively popular game..

You won't be able to use CS 1.3 because, when you connect to a server, it checks your version of Half-Life and your version of CS. If your versions don't match the versions being run by server, you're out of luck.

I suppose there's a TINY chance you'll find some crappy, Windows server somewhere, which uses 1.3 for some reason or another...
