The fact is Nintendo do not believe there is any future in Internet console gaming, I’m inclined to agree for the simple reason that online play doesn’t appeal to me. But Nintendo have more reason that most to distrust online play, they have experience. They have used online networks from as early as the NES with online connectivity for banking, the SNES used it, the N64 had a small playing network called Rad-net avalible with the failed 64DD. The Gameboy Colour incorporates WAP phone gaming again futher evidence of online connectivity. So those who say SEGA are the most experienced are very wrong, but SEGA didn’t have much luck with the Net. Early on in the Dreamcast’s life there was no compulsion to use the Internet, it took a while before anything other than Chu Chu rocket used the feature to full effect. One of the most famous is Phantasy Star Online. But Nintendo is holding SEGA’s game back, why? What are Nintendo’s online plans?
Well the mystery has slowly begun to reveal itself with the recent Squaresoft – Nintendo treaty, many are well aware of Square’s desire to release Final Fantasy XI on all systems and so the likelihood of a Gamecube release of this is highly likely. And now a few begin to realize, Nintendo having bad experiences in the past with the net is not about to repeat the mistake. They are not prepared to spend years of development time and millions of dollars creating an online game (which is very hard to do). Instead they are letting others do it, and judging on the success of the other companies will probably make Nintendo’s mind up. So why wait? Why not release Phantasy Star Online version 2 now and get it out of the way? It is simply because if Nintendo can succeed early on in their Internet life then they can begin developing their games straight away and in order to do so a decent launch is required. What would be interesting is if Capcom brings one of the Resident Evil spin off’s to the Gamecube in the form of Resident evil online. If Resident Evil, Final Fantasy XI and Phantasy Star Online 2 were at the start then Nintendo will have a good idea of what the Internet is capable of and what money if any can be made from it, if 3 huge 3rd party games can’t make anything from it then Nintendo were right all along and the future isn’t Net play.
This is a very ruthless ploy by Nintendo, rather than risk it themselves they are letting three huge 3rd party companies run the gauntlet instead. It is far from the fact that Nintendo are scared of new ideas, we all know Nintendo are happy to take on new genres or make shock changes to existing ideas (*cough* Zelda) but as Shiguru said “We don’t think the internet is the future like out competitors do”. So as Sony and Microsoft make massive leaps to get onto the Internet bandwagon, Nintendo are going for a more cautious hop. To be quite honest the Internet has the capabilities to ruin any of the three consoles, Microsoft does have much more experience meanwhile and so they do know how to market it. But if Sony completely mess up with the Internet then we may see a shift in who is leading the market. I may be imagining the worse (or the best depending on which side of the coin you fall) but it is certainly not impossible. So Nintendo’s plan may be a wise one, it is also a plan that by looking at the titles is unlikely to fail. And if FFXI makes millions, and Phantasy Star Online allows every SEGA employee to retire early then Nintendo themselves can leap aboard and bring a whole host of Nintendo related online titles as well.
And when the happens I will join them, the thought of playing Pokémon online in a similar style to Phantasy Star Online is enough to compel me to dish out the money for a modem and keyboard. We are aware that Nintendo are trying a different approach to Gamecube’s Mario Kart, and an online version could be what the big cheeses in Nintendo’s office are planning. It is said that Sonic is to appear in it, this could mean input from the Sonic team who are responsible for Phantasy Star Online and so therefore have experience in developing for the internet. The thought of playing classic Nintendo multiplayer titles such as Mario Golf and Tennis or Smash Brothers is very exciting too. And with this RARE would join in which would mean that Perfect Dark Zero could feature a stunning online option that would put competitors to shame.
Nintendo’s more ruthless approach to the market in order to win back the land taken Sony is again evident in their online plans. And if they manage to pull it off, a whole host of brilliant games are sure to follow and then the Internet would truly be the future.
