Nintendo’s online plans have been discussed a lot, but the question still remains, why are you taking so long Nintendo? Phantasy Star Online Version 2 is ready to go and if plans were announced earlier, games such as Tony hawks Pro Skater 3 would of got the online function avalible on the Playstation 2 version. Yet Nintendo are sticking by their watch and wait strategy, but what are they waiting for and if they wait too long, will they be too late to jump on the Internet bandwagon to make any profit?

The fact is Nintendo do not believe there is any future in Internet console gaming, I’m inclined to agree for the simple reason that online play doesn’t appeal to me. But Nintendo have more reason that most to distrust online play, they have experience. They have used online networks from as early as the NES with online connectivity for banking, the SNES used it, the N64 had a small playing network called Rad-net avalible with the failed 64DD. The Gameboy Colour incorporates WAP phone gaming again futher evidence of online connectivity. So those who say SEGA are the most experienced are very wrong, but SEGA didn’t have much luck with the Net. Early on in the Dreamcast’s life there was no compulsion to use the Internet, it took a while before anything other than Chu Chu rocket used the feature to full effect. One of the most famous is Phantasy Star Online. But Nintendo is holding SEGA’s game back, why? What are Nintendo’s online plans?

Well the mystery has slowly begun to reveal itself with the recent Squaresoft – Nintendo treaty, many are well aware of Square’s desire to release Final Fantasy XI on all systems and so the likelihood of a Gamecube release of this is highly likely. And now a few begin to realize, Nintendo having bad experiences in the past with the net is not about to repeat the mistake. They are not prepared to spend years of development time and millions of dollars creating an online game (which is very hard to do). Instead they are letting others do it, and judging on the success of the other companies will probably make Nintendo’s mind up. So why wait? Why not release Phantasy Star Online version 2 now and get it out of the way? It is simply because if Nintendo can succeed early on in their Internet life then they can begin developing their games straight away and in order to do so a decent launch is required. What would be interesting is if Capcom brings one of the Resident Evil spin off’s to the Gamecube in the form of Resident evil online. If Resident Evil, Final Fantasy XI and Phantasy Star Online 2 were at the start then Nintendo will have a good idea of what the Internet is capable of and what money if any can be made from it, if 3 huge 3rd party games can’t make anything from it then Nintendo were right all along and the future isn’t Net play.

This is a very ruthless ploy by Nintendo, rather than risk it themselves they are letting three huge 3rd party companies run the gauntlet instead. It is far from the fact that Nintendo are scared of new ideas, we all know Nintendo are happy to take on new genres or make shock changes to existing ideas (*cough* Zelda) but as Shiguru said “We don’t think the internet is the future like out competitors do”. So as Sony and Microsoft make massive leaps to get onto the Internet bandwagon, Nintendo are going for a more cautious hop. To be quite honest the Internet has the capabilities to ruin any of the three consoles, Microsoft does have much more experience meanwhile and so they do know how to market it. But if Sony completely mess up with the Internet then we may see a shift in who is leading the market. I may be imagining the worse (or the best depending on which side of the coin you fall) but it is certainly not impossible. So Nintendo’s plan may be a wise one, it is also a plan that by looking at the titles is unlikely to fail. And if FFXI makes millions, and Phantasy Star Online allows every SEGA employee to retire early then Nintendo themselves can leap aboard and bring a whole host of Nintendo related online titles as well.

And when the happens I will join them, the thought of playing Pokémon online in a similar style to Phantasy Star Online is enough to compel me to dish out the money for a modem and keyboard. We are aware that Nintendo are trying a different approach to Gamecube’s Mario Kart, and an online version could be what the big cheeses in Nintendo’s office are planning. It is said that Sonic is to appear in it, this could mean input from the Sonic team who are responsible for Phantasy Star Online and so therefore have experience in developing for the internet. The thought of playing classic Nintendo multiplayer titles such as Mario Golf and Tennis or Smash Brothers is very exciting too. And with this RARE would join in which would mean that Perfect Dark Zero could feature a stunning online option that would put competitors to shame.

Nintendo’s more ruthless approach to the market in order to win back the land taken Sony is again evident in their online plans. And if they manage to pull it off, a whole host of brilliant games are sure to follow and then the Internet would truly be the future.

Here’s to the future

As i

Not too sure about that seven year life span for the Gamecube. I would say about a three year life span. Microsoft didn't help and won't help that equation though :o)

Nintendo do have a modem planned, but Nintendo are old hat with the internet thing and they know that playing with the net is like playing with fire.

As i said when Pokemon online or mario net comes out i will get a modem it is worth buying but this won't be fora few years... the Gamecube has a 7 year life span.

"No it doesn't come with a modem not that i want one."

Hmmm, looks like you contradict yourself Dringo.

The fact is that online play is the next (half) step for gaming. People have been saying it for years on the PC, and look at it. Whole online communities based around 1 game.

Now it's spreading to consoles as well.

If Nintendo don't get their act together and get some online titles out (whether it's first or third party doesn't matter), they WILL be left behind and find themselves in last place. Again.

Surely they can't afford another poor selling console.

They HAVE to make the GC a commercial success, which means selling as many as possible, which means offering at least the same services as the competiton.

Ok, no DVD player, but that's excused with the low price. But if there's no online options at all, well, you may as well nail the lid on the coffin now.

Yes, Nintendo do have their faithful who will buy the console regradless, but for how much longer will that provide enough money to keep them going?

Sort it out Nintendo, give gamers what they've benn able to get elsewhere for years.

1: Nintendo are already developing titles such as Mario Kart, Tennis and Golf and moving it to online play wont take too long if the bases of the game is inplaced, remember Camelot took 8 months to make Mario Tennis on the N64.

2: Nintendo don't trust the internet and if they are right in thinking so they may of made the wisest move out of all three of them.

3: No it doesn't come with a modem not that i want one.

That was a good read, but one thing I want to know:

Does the GC come with a modem? Or do you have to buy it seperately?

Moving onto some points you've made...

You say that if Nintendo wait for PSOv2, FFXI and (an as yet unconfirmed) RE title, they will then start to develop their own multiplayer titles.

But this will take years!

Let's say that all three thrid party titles are released and fully online functional by Christmas. Nintendo will then start developing their own title, which seems to take Nintendo longer than anyone else.

So you're looking to about 4 or 5 years time before Nintendo's own online titles are released! By that time the PS3 will (probably) be out, and their will no doubt be talk of an XBox 2.

Once again Nintendo will have left it too late.

The fact is, online play will never take off if people don't support it. It's as simple as that. It's like saying "Oh, I won't get that job, so I won't go for the interview." Well you WON'T get the job if you don't go for it. It seems the same as Nintendo's attitude now.

There is no way that online play can fail. It's taken off so much in the last few years. Just look back to when then only game you could play online was Quake. And see what we've got now, eh?

If Nintendo's games are as good as you say they are, they WILL take off online. The DC succeded, with only 3 major online titles (Chu Chu Rocket!, PSO, Quake 3).

Come on Nintendo, sort it out. Get it right for once. Support online play, otherwise you'll lose out. Again.
