It's near Christmas. That means more adverts for games and consoles, yes it does.

It also means tie-ins to popular TV and Movies, where game companies can come up with any old game and sell it on the premise of the character. Which brings me to Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter game looked promising, much more so than the last one. It's not something I'd personally play, but it looked good all the same and still does. However, one thing niggles me. The advert.

If Harry Potter, the game, looks good, then why show only the FMV? Isn't that selling the game on false pretences? Even then, it wouldn't be as bad as what EA have actually gone and done. Look closely at the advert (now showing every 15 minutes, or so it seems) and you will see a little line of text that runs 'some footage not in game.' Now, firstly that means that some of it was made especially for the advert, but more importantly, there is NO game footage AT ALL in the advert, it is ALL FMV! The text does nothing to counter this, and far from harming the advert, makes it sound like the CGI that is there has at least some connection with the graphics in the game as you play it.

Those cunning marketing people are probably patting themselves on the back as the watch all the kid's faces light up right now. But is it right or have they gone too far? I suppose you could say that at least they should some graphics, even if they were Intro bits, but look at the Two Towers advert, that gets away with in-game graphics and still looks amazing, as did the Mario advert and many others. To me it smacks of the advertising people being scared of their product, which sends worrying signals to me.

I still think the game itself could be good, I'm just worried about the way in which it's being sold. Is this the future of game advertising?
