Thirteen Days came out a month or so ago on DVD and has received little attention, just like its cinema release. "You'll Never Know How Close We Came..." is it's tagline. And its about the Cuban Missile Crisis....wait come back !
It is, brilliant. Scenes of dialogue mixed with action, great acting and memorable scenes/lines. It is ace. If you thought it was a boring political loads of talking fall asleep film then you're wrong, just like I was. In addition there are plenty of extras about the real situation and commentaries by the director. Nearly all of the story is 100% true, no creative license for the most part.
Two of the most powerful scenes are;
When Kevin Costner's character gets into bed, his wife asks him if everyting will be okay. He says back to ther that if they see the sun in the morning it will be (sounds cliche hear but in the film it works)
The president finds out that, with 12 hours to go, the soviets aren't backing down (again, this works in hte film). Le may puts the US forces onto 1 DEFCON level below all out war.
Like titanic sceptics have said this film is rubbish because "we already know what happens". True, we know the overall story, but not in this detail and way. One day long ago, the whole world was less than 12 hours from nuclear war, and no film puts this across more hauntingly and effectively than Thirteen Days. If its all a bit heavy and depressing, then buy Legally Blonde as well :)
Apologies
:D
Starts of quite quick to set the scene with some nice planes etc. Then something happens (wont give anything away for ya) which sends everyone into state of emergency. Costner (sp?) then has to try and and help sort the whole thing out (he is actually very good throughout the film). There is a lot of discussion which you will obviously enjoy.
If you know the true life background you will know what goes on I should think. I didnt, hence it was all new to me and I still don't know if they stuck to the true life story. In hind sight I agree, this would probably make it a cracking film knowing the reality behind it all!
As it was though, I found myself itching for someone to wack on a set of fold away dark sungalsses, stick 'Dangerzone' on and do a flyby on the control tower.
For me though, people standing around talking politics means I want to watch it, rather than men flying planes and shooting stuff.
I know the history of the Cuban Missile Crisis (current thought is that Kennedy's actions sealed his fate with the military-industrial complex and brought about his assasination), and I like Costner.
Sod it, I'm buying this one.
I think I enjoy films with a lttle more action - it certainly had its moments but I wouldnt choose to watch it again. Little too much talking about politics and not enough flying airplanes! There was another one out at the same sort of time as it (with Kurt Russel in it trying to authorise his own rescue or something - I forget) which was quite similar but I enjoyed more. Can't for the life of me remember its name though.
Thats my personal view - I'm not saying it was bad, just wasn't for me
I was talking about this at the weekend with a mate, and I haven't seen a Costner film I haven't enjoyed.
Waterworld was top stupid fun and had Dennis Hopper in it.
The Postman was a Mad Max 2 rip-off with excellent stuff in it and was, again, good fun.
I'll stand up and say "Hey I like Costner".
Is this worth getting without renting 1st?
It looked excellent
