What on earth am I on about ? People cancelling their Xboxs en masse? Nope, afaraid not.

Thirteen Days came out a month or so ago on DVD and has received little attention, just like its cinema release. "You'll Never Know How Close We Came..." is it's tagline. And its about the Cuban Missile Crisis....wait come back !

It is, brilliant. Scenes of dialogue mixed with action, great acting and memorable scenes/lines. It is ace. If you thought it was a boring political loads of talking fall asleep film then you're wrong, just like I was. In addition there are plenty of extras about the real situation and commentaries by the director. Nearly all of the story is 100% true, no creative license for the most part.

Two of the most powerful scenes are;

When Kevin Costner's character gets into bed, his wife asks him if everyting will be okay. He says back to ther that if they see the sun in the morning it will be (sounds cliche hear but in the film it works)

The president finds out that, with 12 hours to go, the soviets aren't backing down (again, this works in hte film). Le may puts the US forces onto 1 DEFCON level below all out war.

Like titanic sceptics have said this film is rubbish because "we already know what happens". True, we know the overall story, but not in this detail and way. One day long ago, the whole world was less than 12 hours from nuclear war, and no film puts this across more hauntingly and effectively than Thirteen Days. If its all a bit heavy and depressing, then buy Legally Blonde as well :)

I liked Waterworld. It was original, kinda.

But you've all forgotten Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. That film rocked. Not only did it have Morgan Freeman in it, but it had the man Metatron. Or Hans Gruber. Call him Alan Rickman, if you really want.

Those are the only two Costner films I can handle.

He's too American. Sorry if that sounds a bit jingoistic. For the same reason I dislike Haley Joel Osment.

I enjoyed The Postman...sorry.
It was escapist rubbish, but it had loads of big explosions and stuff.

I don't know, I just like Costner.

It is ! And if you don't know the real story then watch the documentary which comes with it. Before I watched this I assumed this was just a US/Soviet argument that was overstated...v.wrong !

That would be the best movie ever.

"Excuse me Mr American Hero, you gotta get the homerun or else all those people that aren't as noble or goodly as you will invade the country"

"Glug glug glug"

Tin Cup ruled.
Bull Durham is excellent
Field of Dreams is one of the best. Ever
No Way Out is cool
Waterworld was huge
The Postman was noble
JFK was excitable

Costner rules.

Does Costner save the day by playing baseball? Underwater?

I expected a load of camp superheroes running about.

Sound like names of porn stars.

Expect "Goose's Gander" and "Ice my man" to appear on screen shortly.

Along with "rear and pleasant danger" - that one still cracks me up

Exactly!

Having said this, I do enjoy a good plot on debatable issues. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood that night. It certainly ain't one to see when you are tired!

Maybe I should give it another go. My girlfriend enjoyed it and she likes stuff like notting hill and bridget jones (although I find them amusing in their place).

As for your launching into 'bloody kids' speech - fair enough, I'm all for it. Far too many little people who go to see a movie for its violence and ignore the inner purpose. Could go on but I may as well just post your 'Battle Royale' review and it would say pretty much everything for me.

I do like to think I am not one of them kids though (dispite being 20). Think it comes with being a student - very difficult to watch a meaningful movie when you don't know your *a**e* from your elbow 18 hours a day.

Now I could have gone into a long "Bloody kids don't have any interest in decent movies with plot and accurate historical blah blah blah", but that made me laugh.

Sometimes all you need from a movie is a midget star flying a jet plane with Kenny Loggins music playing.
