Because to be honest, i cant see one, not many magazines that i have read lately, not that i get many have pointed out any truly great games to look out for like they did MGS2, nor has the internet. So why? Is it the fact that there really are non in the pipe line at the minute? That we have not got no more truly great games in the coming months apart from FF10 to play? I dont think so, i fail to see that we have no more superb games other than FF 10 to look forward to, i think its more of a fact that the industry is changing.
MGS 2 was one of the few games that had lots of hype around it, where as games like Pro Evo, GTA3 and DMC all used the word of mouth and reviews that were done at the time to sell. The developers did not go around with the hype of these games and send all the gamers expectations sky high. And thats what i think the developers are doing right now. GTA 3, pro evo and DMC were all great games, and when they were released hardly anyone had anything bad to say about them, we thought they were pritty perfect. Where as MGS 2 with all its hype has come with a fair amount of flack with the high expectations, mainly around the cut scenes, and because of this got some bad reviews, which surely would have been influenced by the hype and that the game did not live up to it entirely.
So the reason why i think that we have not heard about many great games to come out soon is that the developers are being a little more carefull not to over sell there games too early and shoot themselves in the foot before its even released. They are keeping quite so that when the game is released its looks very good and has things that we were not at all expecting within it.
Makes sence.
I have no doubt that there are some truly good games coming out this year, but none of them have put themselves in MGS 2's shoes and claiming that they will be the next big thing. But maybe this is what Sony want, all the best games to be equal so more people buy them, or its just the fact that none of the developers wants to stick there necks on the line.
Well I disagree with you when you say there are not enough games in the pipeline. Besides the superb Final Fantasy X there are games such as Tekken 4, MoH Frontline, Timesplitters 2 and many others. I personally think this year is going to be the best for us PS2 gamers.
Thing is, as you said developers need to be very careful what they say about the game and they need to make sure that only certain data gets in magazines and on websites. There is simply no point in starting to praise the title, that no-one knows about and especially if it fails to sell once released. For example GTA3 was not released with a lot of hype surrounding it. I do not remember magazines devoting loads of pages for previews, interviews and news reports. During the months before the release of the game, I could only see small columns that had some information on the proposed released date of the game and some features. Even when it came out, it was reviewed over a page or two, rather than 5-6 that WWF Smackdown got in alnmost all publications. And we all know what happened to the game....
I think that if the developers keep the audience partly in the dark, but at the same time manage to convince the media that the game looks promising, they are bound to be successful. Only rubbish games are trying to get as much hype as possible so that they sell as many copies. Of course, there are exceptions but still..As you said games like Pro Evo Soccer and GTA3 simply didnt need praise from magazines, because they knew they will be able to attract the gamers attention.
So whereas I dont diasagree with you on the amount of good games coming out, I must say that developers are beginning to be more careful what they say. THQ have learnt their lesson after countless interviews praising SD:JBI and its limitless features, and in the end the game has hardly had a quarter of all the things mentioned.
Considering how many great games are coming out for the PS2 this year, and the fact that there are bound to be another HUGE amount revealed at the E3 show in Los Angeles, I believe that this year is going to be a great year for us.
Plus considering the competittion with the Microsoft and Nintendo, developers will try extra hard to bring out the best quality titles out for our little black box...
You speak my mind completely. Therefore, I have nothing to say! :)
