Last week I popped into my local well-know supermarket chain to pick up the latest issue of OPS2 and a packet of crisps. The woman behind the checkout ran the crisps through the beeping thingy, but the magazine forced the machine to make a loud blooping noise while the words “is the customer 18?” lit up on the screen. The woman looked as puzzled as I did. She turned to me and said, “are you 18, love?” at first; I didn’t know what to say because it was a playstation mag, not a copy of boobs monthly. I told her that I was 18, but that I hadn’t brought any ID with me because I wasn’t on planning on buying booze or porn today. I added that I’d never been asked for ID before and that the machine must be playing up.

She called over another attendant and relayed the situation, at which point she looked me up and down, trying to decide whether or not I was 18. She eventually decided I couldn’t have the mag if I didn’t have proof of age. I was quite angry with this. “But it’s a playstation mag!” I cried! She said, “yes but you could be any one – you could have been sent in by the police to check that we’re following the rules, and it’s a £5,000 fine if we sold this magazine to you. It is illegal to sell adult material to underage children”

I felt like a total plumb standing there arguing my way around a games magazine, like a little kid who was trying to get away with buying dodgy porn. So I took my crisps (which tasted like acid, by the way) and went home in a rather bad mood. Do you know why this happened? It’s not like your demo disc has offensive material on it, and its most certainly not got porn on it, that’s for sure. So please tell me what the hell was all that about?

I did actually write in to the official playstation 2 magazine, so if you see it in there I haven’t just copied it out.

Ha, sounds about right, though I've been asking everyone even remotely doubtful about age for GTA Vice 'cause we know Trading Standards are on the prowl with that one....

My brother is 21, nearly 22, and has no problem buying games. One week however, not so long back, we went into HMV in Oxford Street to buy a 15. The cashier said to my brother "Are you old enough to buy this game?". I myself am 15, and a lot smaller then he is. What would he have said to me? Anyway, my brother said "I'm 21, are you taking the p!ss?" Quite funny seeing the look on the guys face. He then said "Sorry mate" and went to carry on with the purchase. My brother then said "Sod this, you can stuff it up your arsse mate" and walked out. Later that week, I, being a lot smaller then him, went into Woolworths in Hounslow, and the kind lady behind the counter never even looked at me to say "Are you old enough?" I got the game fine, and am now enjoying playing it, as is my brother. For those of you interested, the game was The Thing.

Wasn't this topic done 3 weeks ago?
I'm sure someone else complained about this.

HA, how stoopid is that.

I bought GTA 1 when it first came out (I was about 15) and I didn't even get any problems with that. Stoopid, stoopid, stoopid.
